This thread brings up a question I ask myself and people that I know from time to time...
How much money could/would you keep a secret? Say you were in Sev, buying a slurpee, and you bought a scratch and win just for the hell of it. Say you won 50 grand. What would you do? Take all your friends on a drunken boozefest to Vegas? Go on leave and travel for a few months?
Personally, I wouldn't tell a soul. I'd make quiet investments and make that money work. But I think my upper limit for outright bragging to my friends, family and CP would be $100,000. Winning anything over a hundred grand would be impossible for me to contain. But less than that, nobody but me would know about it.

If I had my way and I won the lottery, I would wish that I could keep it from everyone. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be possible since the lottery commissions like to release the names of the big winners.

Would I continue to work- no.
How much would I need to "retire?" I can't believe all these people who say multi-millions. I would do just fine on 1 million; assuming I could get into some sort of investment that would pay me 5% interest.
Pay off my debts and bring in $40K per year. With no mortgage that works out to the same kind of money I make now. Find some part time gig like a golf course starter or working at Totem or something. Use that as my "fun" money.

Whenever I buy a lottery ticket, I have the recurring daydream of what I would do. Lately, the reality that has injected itself into my daydream is a couple of lazy in-laws asking for their share. So yeah, I'd try to keep it as quiet as possible.
The other piece of strategy I have is to dramatically alter my appearance when going to cash in the winning ticket, as there's always media present for big wins. Shave my head, wear glasses, etc.
I think about this way too much.

Agree with you there too. Don't tell a soul. I made some good money in a real estate deal. Unfortunately that's put in the paper, etc. It sounded like a lot of money to a lot of people...but it really wasn't. And a lot of those people suddenly started acting quite strange about it. I hope you win something as you have the right attitude. And also I went a bit wacky for awhile because I let the money lead me to believe I'm something I'm not.

Not a Goddamn chance. I'd leave so fast you'd see a cartoon puff a smoke shaped like me.
I might get a fun job like being an usher at hockey games or something. But certainly nothing serious or full time.

I'd go on at least one drunken boozefest, but I'd lie about where I got the money; tell 'em I robbed a coke dealer or something.

I'd work, but in a different capacity. I'd have the money to do what I really want with my schooling, which requires A LOT.

Wow I'm really surprised at how much it would take people to quit work.
A cool million and I'm out. I don't want or need a big house, so I buy a nice $300,000 dollar house, and there's no mortgage to worry about.
Pay off my student loans, and just work at some job that I find fun and interesting a couple days a week. Those jobs in general don't pay well, but I wouldn't need much money with no mortgage to pay, and no debt.
Or what I might do is like someone above suggested, put the money where I can get a 4% - 5% return, and just work for a year or two, take the money I get on my return and invest that into a property/debts.. Then when thats all taken care of quit, and live off of that.

That's pretty much why I buy lottery tickets. Not because I expect to win but I get to daydream about the fantasy.

For me I'd try and grow as big a beard as possible, get the biggest, dorkiest glasses possible and get a hardcore fake tan.

Great thread! Would I work? HELL NO! I also wouldn't keep it a secret...I'd have a fricken' parade down Main street with me sitting on a throne and wearing a crown and such. I love my job, but wouldn't miss it a lick. As others have already said, life is short and there's too many other things to do and see rather than work.

I think that a $1 Million lottery win means that you still have to work at something if you want to actually have a reasonable standard of living for a family. I think it means you can retire earlier, or possibly put your self out of debt.
$5Million should allow you to quit working for the man, but i think you would have to do some work for your self to ensure that you are making reasonable money on your winnings.
$20Million - I think that you can live off the interest/investment income well enough to not worry about anything (assuming you don't spend it all on hookers and blow).
At anything more than $5Million, I wouldn't be doing a desk job, and most likely would work for myself ensuring my lottery winnings helped earn more cash.
I agree with GreenTeaFrapp - the reason to buy a lottery ticket isn't for the stellar gambling odds, but to enjoy the daydream.

I'd probably work 10-15 hours a week doing retail, with a job that offers me flexibility (vacations).
Just to keep me active, connect with people and on the ball with things in general.
