Inter-city transportation options in So. Alberta

More specifically, transportation options between Calgary (YYC) and Medicine Hat (downtown), other than rental car.

I'm flying into Calgary in a few days for a friend's wedding. I know enough people in the Hat that a rental car isn't worth the cost/effort for the trip I don't think.

Is catching the earliest departing Greyhound each way my best bet? Any other options? ... maybe something I could book online (already checked Greyhound's website - no dice)?

Aside from car rental and Greyhound, I think your options are either car theft or hitch hiking.

Yes, they do not go to the Hat though. 1000X better than Greyhound at only slightly higher prices.

i think other than Greyhound he is SOL.

If you do choose greyhound and you are not pressed for time, you can take the City bus from the Airport to the C Train Station then the train to downtown then walk to the bus depot. Not a short walk but cheaper than a taxi 2.50 vs 40ish.

The cost to do it by Greyhound is $102 + an airport shuttle of $14/each way for a cost of $130.00. You'd then maybe need to use a taxi or transit to get around Medicine Hat.

To rent a car through Expedia.ca from Friday at 4 PM until Sunday at 4 PM would cost $130 including taxes. You'd have to pay for some gas, but this seems like a far better option to me.

I appreciate this. The costs are surprisingly similar. hmmm.

I think I will just go the Greyhound shuttle and bus route, though. It's just a weekend trip, I used to live in the Hat, and I can walk from the bus station to the place I'm staying overnight. The convenience of a rental won't be worth the added stress of keeping it in pristine condition to me.

Frankly, I just feel like relaxing, maybe reading a book, and letting someone else drive. That ain't the most compelling stretch of highway I've ever driven.

My grandpa used to tell me stories of how they'd catch a freight from Drumheller into Calgary for the weekend, and then back to Drum Sunday night. This was back in the early 30's, and since few people had cars and there was no bus, it was the freight or nothing.

Of course then he'd go on into a rant about how we young'uns have it soft, but I never noticed him passing up a ride to town, either...

LOL! I remember when I used to hang around downtown as a mischievous teen. Had a buddy whose g/f lived in Ogden. So we jumped on a train down by 9th ave and the damn thing started heading toward Bowness, so we jumped off and jumped on another train and ended up in Alyth yards and had to hike it to Ogden.

Of course, when I tell that story to my little bro, there were no mistakes. We jumped a train to Ogden.
