I dated a vegan once. She wasn't so bad. She understood it was human nature but said it was just her personal opinion to avoid animal products. Never tried to push the issue.

She did have a leather watch strap, though. About as down-to-earth as you can get for a vegan.
so she didn't eat any meat.....of any description.....I can see why you dumped her

What makes the life of a seal and the products from them and the livelihood made by people upon them any different from that of any other animal that is slaughtered for meat and skin? (Cows for beef and leather).

It's just a bunch of pictures of cute animals and crimson pools of blood on pure white ice that is appealing to the irrational sense of some people. Have you seen all the blood inside a slaughterhouse/meatpackers? It's also an easy issue for career politicians in Europe to latch onto that has no impact and no downsides for them.

Seals are not endangered, they are breeding in massive numbers. It's the fish they are preying on that is probably even more important to humanity. Why no ban on fish products? If there's any environmental or ecological travesty - it's the global fishing industry which is fishing all the fish out of the oceans. The level of fish the ocean supported 100 years ago is something ridiculous like 80% more fish than there are now.

Do you swat mosquitos? The answer to this will show if you truly belive that all living things are equal, or if you just draw the line in a different place.
Do you use medications? This will show whether or not your moral highground extends to things that make your life better/easier.

Not to mention the fact that your only response to justify why testing on criminals is better than using rats was to ask me if I would want revenge on someone who killed my family.

We're not arguing for the sake of arguing, we asking questions for the sake of getting you to back up your arrogance.

Just thought I'd get this post onto the last page, as it seems to be going unnoticed, which is kind of weird, considering almost every other post is being responded to passionatly

Right. I have been vegetarian for 32 years. I don't wear leather. I don't buy Australian wool (mulesing). I use medication that was around before I became vegetarian - salicylic acid for one. I don't kill ants (I put out cucumber peel strips to deter them from my front path), I don't kill wasps (I hang a brown paper bag from a tree as a deterrent to nesting), I would NEVER kill a bee (they are too vital to the future of the planet with their role in pollination). As I don't kill ants I don't have to kill greenfly on my plants. I wear mosquito repellent (citronella) and have screens on my doors and windows so I have no need to kill a mosquito. Of course, the mosquito is a very touchy subject with their being at the root cause of malaria in Africa. I support a charity that supplies mosquito nets to Africa. I choose not to eat meat or fish. I do not consider that plants - being non-sentient and having no central nervous system - suffer in any way. I always consider that question confrontational and unnecessary. My husband does eat meat and fish. We have not been buying Canadian seafood as a boycott against the seal hunt. He attended the anti seal hunt rally in Calgary with me last month. He totally respects me for my choice of life style. He also enjoys all or any of my vegetarian meals. I will not cook or prepare veal, lobster or poussin. I buy any meat he has from Calgary Farmer's market. It is certainly more expensive but if that is what he has to pay to ensure some level of humane husbandry then through his wallet it will be. He does not go into fast food restaurants. I worked at a wildlife hospital and rehabilitation centre for 12 years in England. I have euthanised animals by iv injection to end their suffering. I would also consider life term prisoners as good testers for drugs. My father died nearly 50 years ago from cancer. When he knew he was dying he allowed the hospital to test different drugs on him. He then donated his body to science. He was a very great man. Also my husband and I have a personal boycott on all products Made in China and have for the past 5 years - China is the only country in the world to have no animal welfare laws at all - so we refuse to partake in any fiscal input. We are both volunteers at the Calgary Humane Society and Heaven Can Wait. All the animals I have ever shared my life with have been rescued from abuse. I have had five cats (and I T/N/R'd a feral colony in England), one goat, two horses and one dog. It is just who I am - I am an animal advocate - I choose to be a voice for the voiceless. I love the Calgary Flames. Any questions?

Jeez, the Nazis thought it was a damn good idea too

How does this keep coming up as some sort of effective alternative to performing tests on rabbits and rats?! .

Personally, my eyes pop when I read this kind of stuff. I'm all in favor of the death penalty, I'm all in favor of long prison terms. But I'm not in favor of inhumane treatment of prisoners, especially the ones that we have to let back out on the streat.

Even though they are high in protein, and can be used to create many of the more popular consumer goods that are available like human bone toothpicks used to get cow out from between your teeth.

Sure. I do not swat mosquito's, if I am going out camping or out in the evening I wear repellent. If one did bite me I would shake it off before squishing it. I have taken medication before but that doe not change the fact that there would be better more effective medicines if the test subjects were human and not a totally different species. Thus why if the experiments are done they should be done on our own species and why we might as well use lifers as they are nothing but a burden to society. The people who in their arrogance and ignorance will say it's crazy and rediculous because they think humans have more right to live then anything else because that is what they are. All living things are equal, we all have the same will to live and we should all have the same rights to life.

Oh please, this has become the ultimate silly defense for people who refuse to rationalize their behaviour. Hitler loved his dogs, he also didn't mind if some of his officers used human hair to stuff their pillows. There is an ethical discrepancy that is so very similar to avoiding the intentional slaying of wasps but condoning medical tests on prisoners. It's insane.
