Default Moving Company recommendations and/or horror stories

I will be moving in June and I would like some moving company recommendations, stories, tales of woe, anecdotes, sage council and/or random comments.

Going from NW calgary to SE calgary (Ranchlands to Lake Chaparral)
There will be beds, couches, a freezer, tv, toolboxes and all of the rest of my crap.

I don't think there is a thread on this, or at least my search of 'moving company' didn't return anything.

Meh, moving companies seem to change all the time. Perhaps someone will have an up to date recommendation.

Halloween... 2004, I moved to Red Deer from NW Calgary. 3 trips back and forth with a truck and a few cars. Nothing was broken. Nothing was missing. Nothing was dammaged.

As easy as it is to call someone to do it for your, there's no one I trust more with my stuff than myself, and a few buddies who expect beer and pizza.

Sorry if this was no help what-so-ever.

Get a bunch of your friends together and rent a few trucks and supply them with lot's beer with a BBQ afterwards. No more worries of stuff being broken and you save some money at the same time.

I used Allied when I moved out of cowtown. The very first thing they moved, a desk, was broken before they even got it in the truck

I would not recommend this company

We needed movers when we were doing our renovation. While work was being done on the main floor of the house, we had to move everything from there down to our walk out. When work was done upstairs, then we had to move everything from the walk out upstairs and when work was all done, then we had to move the walk out stuff back down. So basically 3 mini moves.

We used minimove.ca, was very pleased. Now this did not involve boxing anything up and moving across town, but we have some very big and some very heavy pieces of furniture and none was broken or scratched or damaged in any way.

As you know, we've moved twice in 3 years. Moved with Jim DeLay Movers both times, and my parents also used his company once for an in-town move and then for a move out to Kelowna. He came highly recommended to my parents, who then highly recommended him to us (my parents have moved A LOT over the years and across Canada so they are pretty knowledgable about good/bad movers).

I honestly didn't do much research other than take the recommendation from my parents and their friends - but I've been happy both times, and next time we move, we'll call him again.

Pretty sure they are not the cheapest ever, but they are fully insured, they haven't lost or broken anything (including some more important pieces like piano, china cabinet, huge TV, etc), and they move quickly.

Here's the company info on superpages:

Doing it yourselves sucks, and I honestly don't find it *that* much cheaper once you price out all the moving supplies you need to do it right without wrecking your stuff (blankets, bubble wrap, etc) and renting a U-Haul or Pod or whatever.

The part that sucks about moving is packing and unpacking. Calling over a few friends and tossing everything in a u-haul is the easy part. Last time I moved, I loaded the truck myself the day before with a little help, then the day of the move I had one person helping me with big stuff and I was unloaded in less than an hour from when he got there.

When I think of paying someone to do that part for it, it just seems stupid.

I inherited a piano from my parents, and I have thousands of dollars worth of big screen television (and some half-decent furniture). Personally, it's worth it to me to pay a few bucks and have a guarantee that my stuff is not going to get wrecked or if it does, that I'm getting the $$ for it. Not like I can really ask my friends for a couple grand to buy me a new piano if they happen to drop it on the way out the door while helping us move.

To keep the costs down, we did move the boxes ourselves because they are easy to pack into the trucks/vans of friends.

... but thanks for calling me stupid.

I also have to move during the week and since all of my friends are employed using them is challenging.

THIS... was also us. We had to move on a Wednesday. Definite PITA.

Oh yeah, ALSO I was 6+ months preggo during the move, so basically every time I tried to lift anything, someone yelled at me to put it down. So one half of the husband-wife moving duo was basically out of commission.

Anyways, I'll stop defending my decision now. OP specifically asked for Mover Recommendations, not "do it yourself" recommendations anyways.

I didn't mean to call you stupid! I was saying it seemed stupid to me. Moving a piano can be brutally tough, and almost always I would pay a mover for that. I guess the difference is that I don't have alot of stuff that is super heavy/expensive.

Also, moving mid week is a total deal breaker unless you know lots of unemployed peeps.
