How is it a bold statement? Just what I think thats all. Pretty big coincidence if not. The Doctors are telling everyone not too worry but come back right away if the symptoms get worse.
I think this thing is just getting way overblown. Like someone said its just a flu but put a special name on it and its am epidemic.
Gotta go....my porkchops are burning.

I agree it's been way overblown, but I think the point being made was that a large part of it being overblown is people who come back from Mexico with any type of illness immediately jumping to the 'it must be swine flu' conclusion, which is what you seemed to be doing. People come back with illness from Mexico all the time, it's not even remotely uncommon, and it's been happening since well before swine flu.
Be vigilant sure, but don't panic or jump to conclusions.

Well it's new, which means no one has an immunity to it, so it can spread faster and infect more people than a known strain of flu.
And any flu is deadly to some people (as you say elderly, or the very young).
So a normal flu is hampered in its ability to kill all the old and young by everyone else's immunity, but in this case that doesn't exist.
(Very simplistic I know)
And early reports had mostly young adults dying, which would be very concerning. These haven't been confirmed though.
So it's a case of being careful until more is known about the bug. It's also a case of the media over-hyping it and people being fearful, but that's to be expected.

Since the flu is always mutating there's never a long term vaccine against it. (which is why they're shots every year for whatever they think is coming)

Swine flu with it's 1 Mexican national who died in the US has nothing on the regular flu.

Right, and they didn't see this coming so there's zero vaccinated people out there for it.

Yet. Who knows what will happen, it'll probably just end up being one more strain to be aware of and one that gets monitored and put into the vaccinations when necessary.
It's that off chance that it's far more virulent that's making the organizations take precautions, which is fine IMO.
It's just annoying to have to listen to the "ongoing coverage" on the radio.

Pretty big coincidence? Not really.
I was at a wedding in mexico in January and at least 10 people came home from it with flu like symptoms. It happens a lot that when people go on vacation they overindulge and can come home feeling like crap, or they pick something up and since they're in a group they all get a little ill.
The "Bold statement" comment on my part was the fact that a doctor told them it wasn't the same thing, and yet you stated that it in fact was.
I'm just saying that, that is the kind of attitued that causes these things to get blown out of proportion.
You said yourself that it is overblow, yet you fell right into the trap of someone you know being sick, and automatically assuming it is the "swine flu", despite a doctor saying otherwise.
In the end it's all moot, as no one is dying (from your group anyway), and you're not causing a national panic, but if people would refrain from making statements like you did, then there would be a lot less false information and we could start to get some better/more reliable information.

I think to be safe everyone should load up with bottled water, crackers, multivitamins, guns, ammo and fireworks.

I think the concern is that it's the H1N1 strain (whatever that means... I think it's to do with the swine?), and the Spanish Flu was also a swine flu. And the Spanish Flu started out as not a big deal compared to the regular flu but then the virus mutated and killed lots of otherwise healthy, young people.
That's my understanding anyways. That it's not a big deal for now, but it could become a big deal if it mutated and there's no vaccine.
But really, when the only precautions are "wash your hands more" and "stay home from work when sick", it's hard to get any more worked up about this then about the regular flu. The media sure is trying though!!

The thread title is a little misleading... a doctor was most likely the person who confirmed the swine flu. All Bankers Hall did was confirm that the parent of the child who has swine flu works in Bankers Hall.
