For the life of me I cannot get the video to embed... either way after a week of listening to my hubby bitching about Druh and blogging on it almost daily; he and I went out and taped the area in question.
This is his creation, starring our bullie, Stewie.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Calgary needs to stop being like other cities and just be the City of Calgary
And what's that? Please, describe this city to me.
In regards to pedestrianizing Memorial, it's the right idea but the wrong place. It's not close enough to the The Bow like Paris Plage, or urban enough like Stephen Ave.

I am not against this idea at all, as long as the city puts some effort into using the space for something other than walking. If they set it up as a board walk type situation, or have some sort of attraction there like music , art show or a chili cookoff even, anything interesting and maybe 'cultural' in some way. If it just ends up being a big bike path next the the normal sized bike path then this idea has no legs.
Edit: Something similar to that Paris Beach thing would be awesome. Not necessarily a beach idea, but the concept of creating something that isn't available anywhere in the city core. Have a giant skateboard park, a go cart track, a beer gardens.

I totally agree. I think its a great idea, but Memorial isn't the right location. I've always thought that you could totally do something like this down on 17th though. Like on weekends you could close off a stretch of a few blocks, and have them only open to pedestrians. You could even have an open air market type thing and vendors.... I just think it would be neat to get people out of their cars and walking more.
Who knows if something like this could ever happen, but a girl can dream!
If Druh really cared about the environment, she'd push through legislation that would make it possible to install solar panels without a building permit.
Her antics are merely shows of power, nothing more.

This idea is borrowed from other cities, Calgary isn't being original it copies other cities constantly.
Despite this not-so well thought initiative (right idea wrong location maybe) Druh Farrell does far more to try and push Calgary in a more liveable direction - particularly when it comes to urban planning and design. She spear-headed a lot of things, even simple things like having an urban design review panel, and bettering urban design standards in planning documents. If you understand the planning process, you'll understand that this has made quite a difference in terms of the quality of a lot of buildings that are going up in Calgary. She's one of the few on council that actually care that Calgary may become a city worth caring about - instead of just becoming another bland sprawled Houston or Phoenix like the Ric McIver's of Council want to.

We need our ideas for the city, not other cities.
An idea that is not original is an invalid one?
Please.
If you think there is anything that happens of cultural importance within the City of Calgary that is an original idea, you have some delusion problems.
This isn't about being original, it is about doing something useful. If they can't make it be useful, then they should let it die a fast death. However, if they can come up with something that this city will use and justify the traffic issues, then I think it it should be supported to the fullest extent, even if it was done in New York, Dallas and 4 times in Podunk, Idaho.

Purdy buildings make a city more livable?
She wants more "urbanity"? Ok then. Have the city buy all the houses in the inner city that are owned by people older than 55, kick them out, and sell the houses at 1/3 their value to young couples with kids.

This idea is so stupid. They just spent millions of dollars on Memorial drive to increase the traffic capacity, not to mention the millions of dollars recently spent to build a gorgeous pedestrian path next to the bike path - reducing congestion along that stretch of river.
This is a classic example of someone saying 'wouldn't it be nice if...' and then not thinking through the idea beyond that simple statement.
As I do not have a car and I don't walk/bike the river, my opinion doesn't really matter. But they there should be getting more public opinions before they do it.
