I'd disagree. I think he stoll brought a lot. When he wanted to, he could analyze line play really well. And it is amazing how often he would say that, "This is a great time for a draw" and it would happen.
I wonder if some people don't take it for granted just how good he is.

Madden seemed to be losing it a bit in his later days of being paired with Pat Summerall. But once he was put with Al Michaels, it seemed to completely rejuvenate him. I think he's been pretty enjoyable the past few years. Perhaps Summerall was rubbing off on him.
At any rate, I find most NFL colour guys (and pbp guys too for that matter) to be absolutely idiotic most of the time, so for people to criticize Madden for his few "Maddenisms" is a bit out of place. Madden is one of the best of a group of pretty mediocre guys.
Someone mentioned Buck and Aikman... I used to enjoy them, but for some reason Buck has begun to get on my nerves in the past couple years. Can't explain it... they just seem to take themselves too seriously.
I think my favourite crew is Dick Stockton, Moose Johnston, and Tony Siragusa.

Iconic. He's never been my favorite, but I've always respected him...especially his knowledge of the game and his willingness to share great stories from his coaching days.
Michaels is money, but I'm not sure Colinsworth is the right guy to go in there with him.
Aikman is the best color man in the game today in terms of explaining what is happening on the field. He's awesome, but he has no personality and that's what Madden brought to a booth.

I figured it out.
Madden could no longer be an analyst...because the one guy he anaylsed more than anyone else...retired.
Its ALL Brett Favres fault.

He did love Brett Favre. Heck, Frank Calliendo has made a career out of how much Madden loved Favre!
I appreciate that about him. He didn't have milquetoast opinions on who the best players were. He appreciated the emotion of the game in an era when technique and perfection were the preferred lines of a success analysis.
