OK - sorry I can't help then.
I got a new Dell laptop about a year ago. The power supply chord would periodically not work. It got worse and worse until I just replaced it. Same thing happened with the replacement so I had to replace that too.
Thought it might be the same problem.

Doesn't really help with the topic on hand, but...
I got a Dell laptop too and after about a year of having it (a month ago-ish), the power chord would stop working from time to time. I just switched the plug-in though and it seems to be doing alright.
Interesting we both had similar problems with the same laptops.
Sorry I can't be of more help with the desktop problem. I've never had a problem like that with any desktop i've ever used...

How do you know it's the Power Supply that isn't working?
It could be a number of things, as a computer needs a working Power Supply, CPU, motherboard, RAM, and Video Card to boot up (or Post). If any one of those things is bad, it won't work.
Do the fans start when you press the button? Any beeps? Or nothing?
A few weeks ago, my computer was working in the morning, and then in the evening, it wouldn't even turn on. Turned out my motherboard was gone and I replaced it, worked better than before after.

Well once i get it to boot it works fine. I played NHL 04 for about a hour and it was perfect. But when i restart the computer wont do anything. I see that the Motherboard is getting power because a light is showing up. I change the little red switch to 250 on my PS and it works only after a couple of start ups.
It sort of kick starts then dies.
maybe it is something else but I think its the PS.

I'm having an annoying problem where I start up my computer and the computer starts but the monitor flashes as if it was off. After clicking the switch on the back a few times it'll start up and work fine. Sometimes it'll start up fine but other times it wont. My computer locks up some times too if I close the case door a bit too hard.

Is the computer actually starting up and going to windows or is it just the monitor doesn't recognize that the computer is started? It sounds a bit like a problem I had once where when I would start or restart the computer, the monitor would flash as if the computer was off and the computer would keep trying to send power to the drives as if it wanted to start up but would never actually start up. Then I would shut it off for a couple of minutes and turn it on again fine. The problem was that I didn't have a large enough power supply for my system (only had 300W). As a temp fix I underclocked my cpu until I got a bigger power supply. Once I did that everything seemed to work fine. Don't know if that is the same problem as you are having though. And I don't know about the closing the case door part.

When I start the computer the lights go on and you can hear the fans running but the monitor lights just as if it was off. This morning when I started it up in ended up getting a CMOS CheckSum error too. This is what my case is:

If you press the button and the fans and lights turn on, but there is no beep or nothing showing on the monitor, then it's not Posting. That CMOS error means that the problem probably lies with your CMOS and/or motherboard. Depending on the kind of motherboard, the CMOS may be fixed.
What kind of motherboard do you have? If you want to get your hands dusty, you can short the "reset jumper" for the CMOS on the board. This will reset the CMOS and it may work. If it don't, then odds are a new motherboard is in the works.

Um, that switch you moved to 250 shouldn't be at 250. The voltage coming out of the wall into the power supply is at 115, not 250.
It could be your Power Supply, CPU, motherboard, or Ram. Best bet is to take it into memoryexpress, or another place if it's still under warranty, and ask them to find the problem. They'll take the unnecessary stuff out, and then replace each component one by one with a known working one until the culprit is found. This usually takes 1 hour of service time (around $50). It's better than guessing which part is bad and replacing them yourself, only to find out the one replaced wasn't bad.
Now where is that nerd smiley?

I have an ELITEGROUP KT600-A motherboard which I just got just before May. I bought a package(motherboard, RAM, processor) from TigerDirect.ca but the motherboard ended up being shot so I sent it back and just bought one from the store here. I've had the startup problem periodically since but the CMOS error just started happening within the last month or so.
