Try this...
System Preferences..
Sound...
Output..
Then switch to external speaker, or whatever pops up that isn't internal speakers.

That didn't seem to work either. I am going to try and locate one of those three coloured cables tomorrow, and see if that works.

Do you have a PS3 or xbox? If you do you can send any files wirelessly to the console to play it on your TV. No cords, no sound or quality issues.
It sounds like I have practically the same set up as you. Macbook with a 40'' Samsung LCD. I was watching movies on my TV with just a monitor cable and a set of bose computer speakers that sit beside my TV.
But when I realized I could just run it through my PS3 I started doing that and it is way more convenient. Also it doesn't tie up your macbook, so you can still use it while streaming your movies.

Yeah I can do that for videos, but this is internet streamed stuff. So I don't think it would work with that. But yeah, for just watching videos on my laptop, that is the way to go. I was shown how to do that by someone here.

No, like two headphone jacks basically. The box says it is 1/8" stereo plug at each end.

The cable is coming from the headphone out jack of your computer right? And into some type of input into your tv? And you are turning your computer's volume up?
Sounds simple but often times its these types of things we overlook.

Try a cable like the one I posted in post #14. There should be a red and white RCA jack near the hdmi port you're using. Fire up the MB and go to the input on your TV. Somewhere in the input settings there should be a way to switch it to analog audio.

Yeah, I've tried putting it in both the PC input, and the headphones jack on the TV. Nothing happens, but sound is definitely working on the laptop, because when I unplug the jack from the laptop, the sound comes out of there.

Some TVs allow one HDMI port to receive audio through their computer audio jack. You'll have to check your manual to find out which one if any.

Thats your problem right there. The headphone jacks that your cord plugs into are only outputs, not inputs. You need this cable:
So plug it into your headphone jack on your mac (output) and the RCA's into the TV (input) and then it will run sound from your comp through your TV.

Yeah I'll try and get one of those. That is the cable I wanted, it's just the guy at the Source said I could get what I got instead. He said it would work in the PC input, but it didn't.

Your first mistake was trusting what a guy working at the Source says.
He was probably too busy walking and chewing gum at the same time to really think about your question.

ALL ABOARD!

I just hooked mine up last night. The thing you have to remember is that the audio inputs must belong to the same video inputs (i.e. AV1 or HDMI1).
I used the VGA input on my TV and found that I needed a cable similar to the speaker or headphone input.
