It doesn't necessarily go on the curb. It goes where your garbage goes.

I refuse to recycle. It costs forestry/paper and mining jobs

We got our blue bins a couple of weeks ago. We live in Lakeview and I think we were one of the first communities to get them. The city is slowly doing a roll out (I think husband's parents who live in Bonavista will be getting theirs in the next couple of weeks...)
You just put it where you put your garbage (in my case in the back alley)

Ok guys, a couple people have mentioned "oh ya, just put it where your garbage goes"
YOU'RE MISSING THE ISSUE
If you put it in the front, your garbage goes before the sidewalk on your property, while blue bins HAVE to go physically on the road to be picked up. That was the OP's question. Garbage is done manually, while the bins have to be at street level to be picked up by the truck. Hopefully the city will give some insight, because its not mentioned on the website or pamphlet.
Same thing goes for back lane garbage. The bin can't be in an enclosure and has to be away from your fence.

They're HUGE bins. They would take most people weeks or months to fill up completely. Just wait until the Chinook to put it to the curb. (OK, I realize my case isn't strong for THIS winter in particular, but Calgary does normally get Chinooks, honest.)

I got mine maybe a week ago! Who ever knew getting blue squares could be good?
I am very happy Calgary finally has done the curbside recycling thing. It's been a long time coming!

I wasn't aware they were the big bins. So how does it work? You toss all your stuff in there and they sort it?
Anyone know what kinds of plastics etc can go in? Right now I only recycle cardboard, but if I could add in plastics, especially those nasty hermetically sealed packages I will be quite pleased.

Ya, you just throw everything in there and don't have to sort. The plastics are 1-7 and basically encompass everything except for oil bottles and things like that. We recycle everything, and have to sort. I can't wait for the program to begin just for that reason alone!
I seriously don't see the issue with the snow removal though. We don't even have a sidewalk in front of our place. When the snow was 3-4 high this winter i just put the garbage bins on the road and would do the same with the recycling bin. The truck just has prongs and picks it up from there...no issue whatsoever.

No styrofoam either.
Also, the bins are great for putting your kids into if they need a time out.

Do they go back to needing diapers if you've already crossed that bridge though?

I'm just in awe that you guys are only getting curbside recycling now.
It's got to be at least 15 years we have had it here.

See in Alberta, we have 3 taps on our sinks.
One for Hot, One for Cold and one for Light Athabasca Crude Oil.
Kinda skews our provincial perspective a bit.
