I phoned rogers to ask about my use of my iPhone while in the States. I was told that if the phone is on and a call comes in, I get dinged even if it goes to voicemail (I don't answer). Calls to Canada will be billed at around $1.70 a minute, about $1.20 within the States and even for voice mail messages that I don't pick up while in the State as well as text messages.

I guess what I'll do is pop out the sim card (easy to do, I've tried it) and then use the phone as an iPod Touch for free wifi only.

I hope the above information helps others who may be in the same same situation who are with Rogers.

Well instead of taking out the SIM card, you can just leave it on Airplane mode and turn wireless on.

At least that's what I think I'll be doing when I head down to the States. That should help me avoid phone calls, but then I can still use data if need be.

73 dollars a month for me Ronald. 250 daytime minutes, free evenings (starting at 5pm), free weekends, an unusable number of texts, call display, voicemail, 6GB of data...

I was on a voice plan before and then added the 6gig plan and th 15 dollar package and my bill with taxes it 84 and change. Not sure what they have now. But I would assume it would be in the 75-100 range per month

He won't be able to get that 6GB deal now though, just keep that in mind.

Not that it's needed, I don't think I've used 6GB TOTAL on my phone since I got it.

yeah that's a good point. I should actually look into lowering my data. Any idea what the current rates are?

I have a heavy voice plan, which I am finding I don't really use all that much anymore.

Maybe I should downgrade.

I think a lot of 6GB data plan holders are going to be pretty happy to have it when they get 3.0 installed and start using tethering.

Yeah I didn't really think about that, I guess I'll wait. I doubt I would really use tethering, but you never know.

Plus the option now is $25 for 500MB.

Really, for 6GB at $30, you could probably sell your account in a few years for a profit.

if I recall correctly they couldnt interfere with any aviation equipment whatsoever with their cell phones. It annoys me everytime I fly because you can't even use an iPod until the seatbelt light turns off, and usually on a trip to Vancouver that damn thing is lit up the whole time.

Do you recall when it was $25 for 5MB and 5 cents a kb? That was a ripoff, this at least is workable.

It usually isn't a safety issue, but transmitted signals can cause interference at critical times, particularly on approach. Usually not an issue, but it can be.
With so many GSM phones out there the TDMA chirping can be heard on the radios. I've forgotten to turn my phone off a few times when I was operating a radar system a few times. But generally.. no problems.

That's absolutely ######ed. It's not using any airtime. I call BS on that.
