Default US government - Cybersecurity.

Quote:
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security." The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.

The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access." This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

Thoughts? Obviously I don't like it.....government has too much control and all that shebang.

But I would have thought that the US government would already have this power in the first place?

The 'internet' is simply many interconnected networks. The government has no more power over the Verizon (or any other telecommunication company) network than it does over any other privately owned company other than the regulations that govern normal operation.

If this bill were to pass, the president could decide, without any other branch of government's approval to shut down, in whole or in part, any infrastructure for these networks within the borders of the US.

That's bad. Like China's censored internet type bad.

I cannot imagine any justification as to why the president would need to have this power and not need to clear it with either the Supreme Court or Congress.

Until now, I thought Obama was doing a good job considering what he was given, but this is just to far.

Edit: After reading the bill, only Sec.18 Part 2
Quote:
The President—
...

(2) may declare a cybersecurity emergency and
order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic
to and from any compromised Federal government
or United States critical infrastructure information
system or network;
...
is anything that I am concerned about. 100% of the rest of the bill contains stuff I consider to be very essential to increasing the security of the internet in general. If it were to include either judicial and/or legislative review or strict definitions of exceptions to that review, I would support it totally.

Yeah, absolutely agreed. The internet is vital to the idea of free speech in both the US/Canada, and the rest of the world, and no one 'branch'....or 'man'.....should have the power to take that free speech away from us.

Even if there is a national security, why is it a problem if people are still allowed to access CP and talk about what happened? I mean....?

Big government I tell you.
