Oh and what kind of format does 8 CF18's look like in attack format? I've never heard of eight. Was it a eight aircraft triangle? never seen or heard of it ever. most formations of fighters are just of two but some bombing runs are of three and six like below.

EDIT: triangles won't format for me on this board...hope you get the idea.

Why don't you be more of a d-bag
If you could read, you'd see that I said I was not a pilot, just thought the planes were cool and have a basic understanding of our air force and can tell a CF18 from 2-4 thousand feet. I said it looked liek what appeared to me to be an attack formation, which yes, with the sets of 2x2 that were flying was like this:
^ ... ^
...^ ...^
It was just an observation that it looked like - Cool your afterburners

Cold Lake has one as well. I think it's in early August, no?
Anyways, that's cool that you saw those planes. We've had some go over our place a few times and holy hummer those things are loud.

And to top it off, he's wrong about afterburners too, they have multiple stages of afterburner.

As far as I know the CF-18 still uses the old GE 404 engines which does not have a "staged" afterburning system like the Pratt and Whitney, It has spray nozzles that as you throttle up dump more fuel to be burnt. If you want to say "full" afterburner it means the plane is probably going supersonic at that point. In the CF-18 the Afterburner is on or not and the pilots aren't allowed to light them very often, especially over populated areas.

Thanks for the info! Like I said, I have nothing more than a passing interest in the airforce, but it sure was crazy to see so many cf18s so low!

My bad too...the CF-18's don't yet have the newer F404-GE-402 engines with multi-stage burners. Not sure if they are scheduled to get those as a part of their modernization projects.

They just went overhead again about a half hour ago. Very cool. The one I could see from my window was turning and had his wing tipped almost 90 degrees to the ground or so it looked anyway. I'm sure that's normal but it is weird to watch.

I think they spent enough on these old birds updating the electronics and instrumentation systems, I think you'll see new aircraft before engine swaps.

Probably not going to happen since the planes airframes are at or beyond their retirement age and the new engines would put a lot of stress on them.
Its time for new multirole fighter/bombers.

I don't recall that being made official thats the rumor but if that were true we'd already be seeing the transitions. Training, parts orders maintenance facilities being changed over.

I saw them this morning at the Southland dog park. Anyone remember when they did a flyby on the first day of stampede and they came in a few hundred feet above the grounds? All the animals in the stables went effing crazy. They haven't been back since.
When I was young, I was in myrtle beach SC when Dessert Shield started an I got to watch the A10s and the F16s leave for the middle east. The F16s would hit it right at the coast line and BOOM.
I was also lucky enough to be on a ship in the Atlantic and have 2 F14s buzz the ship at supersonic speed. That's an experience. All you hear is whoosh and see the plane fly by with the roar of the engines a few seconds later trying to catch up.

2012?
I highly doubt it, the upgrades to the existing hornets were to have them last in a decent role to at least 2018. and if we were getting new F-35's in 3 years it would be hard to keep that secret.

My dad was in the air force so I've always been interested in planes.
Here's a great F-18 video if you're interested:

Were you lucky enough to see this?

U.S. Navy Picture published in July 1999 in Boeing News Web Site.

As yet, there has been no official announcement as to if, when or how many F-35 planes Canada may acquire.
Canada is a "Level III" partner in the development of the F-35, along with Australia, Denmark, Norway and Turkey and have contributed between 125 and 175 million to the System Development and Demonstration phase of the project.
At the current time, the F-35 is expected to end its SDD phase of flight testing in 2012.

I think it's time for schools to start having bomb drills again, you know the one, where you hide under your desk because bombs and radiation can't get you when your hiding under a desk.

I was involved in a couple "Freedom of the City" parades while I was with the Cal Highs. We would march through downtown in full dress uniform, bayonettes fixed on rifles. Pretty awesome to march along to Black Bear on the bagpipes down the middle of the street.
