Default Monitor Question/Problem

Hey CP

Another quick question for the masses. I have a Samsung LCD monitor for my desktop. For some reason, if I turn off the monitor to go away from a computer for a bit, the computer doesn't detect it when I come back and turn the monitor on again. The monitor will search for input sources (Digital, HDMI, Analogue) and then give up after awhile. I have to reboot my computer before the screen works again. This occurs whether I'm using a DVI or HDMI. The manual suggests ensuring my videocard driver is up to date (Radeon HD 4870). For laptops, there is a Func + F4 that you can press that I can sometimes use if my screen wasn't showing. Is there something like that for PC's? Besides from ensuring my drivers are up to date, is there any advice you can give me?

Thanks

I am guessing you are on Vista and your computer is going into sleep mode. When I first got my laptop it would do the same thing on sleep. So I changed my settings to accommodate how I use my computer and it never goes into sleep mode anymore.

IIRC what was actually happening with my computer was the HDD & Screen were going to sleep, and Vista is having issues with restoring from it. If you eliminate your HDD going to sleep it should stop the issue from occuring.

If you are not using Vista, disregard this.

I'll second the note about Vista going to sleep. Vista's got some really crummy sleep code and has all sorts of problems waking up. Try disabling this function and see if that helps.

What do the power settings say to do when you are idle for x minutes? Hibernate?

If you turn on your monitor and the screen remains blank or dark, try these suggestions:

Turn off display after 20 min, never sleep

Thanks Dion, I did all of those. Monitor is fine as far as I can tell, it's something on the Vista or video card end

I run into problems when I turn off my monitor when I step out, so I'll just leave it on to see if that helps (and have it go to screen saver/blank screen)

Thanks for the support

What about the disk? That is what causes this problem. Your monitor has nothing to do with the issue you are having (if it is the same one I had)
