I am always, always, ALWAYS angered by barbers. I have received some of the worst hair cuts in human history, haircuts that would make obscure Brazilian tribesmen and their children laugh at me in my face.
I grow my hair out long now because I just refuse to let any so-called 'barber,' aka, 'hack saw artist,' touch it. Every time, and I mean EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. I go in for a haircut it just turns into an unmitigated disaster. How bloody hard is it to cut hair that is down to a guy's shoulders, when all he asks for is a trim? Keep it the exact same shape, I say, I just want it a half-inch shorter. Is that so hard? Is it?! By the time the most recent lady got through with it, it looked like a slightly longe rversion of this:
Seriously. I am not kidding. Do you know what it's like to walk around with hair like that? Do you?! It's like waking up to a cruel joke that gets incrementally crueler as the day goes on. And that's just a trim. And I've gone to a million different barbers in two separate provinces, but they all, every one, fail miserably. I think they have a picture of a mutant beneath their counter that they pull out for an HPLovecraft special. I am so discouraged. I go in with the attitude of knowing it will be screwed up, but just hoping it's not so bad that I can't salvage it in some way.
I once told my girlfriend I'd only get my haircut (since she wanted me to get it done for some bloody reason, even though I explained to her how hair stylists get a twinkle of glee in their eye every time I enter the building, knowing they geta chance to practice their Gregorian monk cuts they so rarely get to try), if she chose a video game character for me to get it styled after. So she picked Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 4.
Whoa, I thought, that's not so bad. A little emo, but whatever, and I don't have blonde hair, but that doesn't matter. So, I printed off a number of pictures from different angles and took it to some barber in a mall nearby. I seriously should have known better by the dim lights and stale smell of the place when I went in, but it said stylist in the ad. STYLIST! Showing him the pictures of what I want, and the way he freaking told me that he didn't need to look at the ones from different angles because he knew what I wanted already should have been enough to make me run off with my tail between my legs, but I froze. Barbers have this way of just making you freeze and not want to humiliate them by telling them just how terrible they really are. Long story short, I, once again, stepped out looking like I just emerged from a Monty Python and the Holy Grail reenactment. He just cut in a damn circle. A CIRCLE.
Phew. I needed that. It's good to vent. If I could find a barber that actually knew how to cut a guy's hair in this city, I would explode in a fit of happiness. Even women stylists that do complex women doos just assume I want it cut in a circle or a buzz cut. Or both at the same time. It's infuriating. I am already dreading my next haircut.

Wow, you need a drink?
By the way I feel your pain. In Jr.High I would get haircuts regularly (every 3 months or so), but then I got lazy and got one every 8 months, and it became super long. Then when I got a few (over the course of 2 years), I realized no one I was going to could cut my hair. Always looked either A) good at the salon, then when I walked out it looked awful B) They cut it waay to short or C) When I asked for a faux hawk (I know ), he used his own style, and made it even more gay/######baggy.
So my mom recommened someone else, I go there, and after 2 haircuts I am already peaved off, my hair is short up top (like I wanted), but the sides are the same length as top, so it looks stupidly wrong.
I should just start to bring pictures of people in and say "that is what I want, I swear to god if you mess this up, I'll %(%*U(*#&%(&#(*&(#".
P.S. I never tip. Just don't think it is worth it when I am never satisfied. Also, I am very cheap.

I have to know just what the requirements are to get your cosmetology license in Alberta, because holy crap, I learned how to not do stuff like that when I was still in school. I've never understood how a stylist can just not hear what a client is saying, and do something completely different than they wanted.

Every day I walk by Dario's in Southcentre mall and I have yet to see a bad haircut walk out of there... How can you not trust a guy that actually uses moustache wax on his moustache? Curl and everything!
Don't bother going on weekends though. I think it's sometimes up to an hour wait even with his other helpers having all 4 chairs going.

I have the same issues.
I went to Sheena at Angles and she followed my directions to a tee and used the razor thinning/texturizing thingy. She is here:

If you have someone who can cut your hair I really recommend purchasing the Waleco or whatever the name is. I went to Barber's when I was a kid and stylists when I was a young guy and basically a waste of money. Sometimes you get a decent cut but then they quit or close down or move etc. Meanwhile with a little practice your cutter whoever that maybe can turn out the same cut time after time.
My wife has it down pat and heck every one of those trips saved to the stylist is another round of golf.

Well so I drove around and went to Beddington's Adam & Eve...W
Mike the owner cut my hair (very reasonable price) 25bucks. Used a razor, took his time and I could tell he knew what he was doing.
Fantastic place...got the haircut I wanted....I've found my new place

Dario used to have porno mags in the waiting area in the 1970s too.

Bump. Looking for a decent haircut, kinda want to get away from the typical barber cut. Anyone know of any good stylists? My price range would be around $40-50 for a good cut.

Its unreal how hard it is to find a good hairstylist/barber in Calgary. I've been back in the city for 3 years and have only recently found one I've kind of settled on because he usually does a pretty decent job.
A lot of places in town charge for a premium cut but make you look like you got stuck with the trainee at Supercuts.

This thread makes me extremely happy that my fiancée is a senior stylist. Free haircuts every couple weeks and free product brought home to try out all the time.

Same with my brothers girlfriend. Seemed like such a minor thing but this thread got me thinking how annoying it would be to have to get a stranger to do it every time.

I have long debated the true quality difference between a $20 barber and a $50 stylist. For the type of short hair I like to have, particularly in the summer, I am wondering if I have been wasting my money all these years on the latter. Ya, they take more time, don't use clippers (as much anyway), and supposedly add more texture. Once a month cut though basically comes to $600 a year!

That and sometimes I don't even have to put pants on or leave the house to get a cut!
