Kind of depends what you are looking for. I find thebest restaurants have small limited menu's, but all the items are done well. I find that when I go to a restaurant that tries to cover off all...then they fall down

i am a bang for your buck kind of guy and "The Keg" is one of the WORST places for steak ever. Its just ok, but for a place that says they are a steak house, it leaves much to be desired. Especially for the price.

Completly 100% agree. I find Joey Tomatos steak to be 10X better then the kegs.

I always find something that falls flat... Usually a terrible appetizer.

St Germain is one of my new favorites in Calgary. I tried it because someone else here recommended it in a similar thread, and it was one of the best upscale meals that we've ever had in the city.

To be quite honest, it probably comes down to personal preference. I love the patio service of Towa with their modern spin on their menu. They are hands down the better joint. I've been to globefish plenty and Towa plenty. Towa is the place I go if I want to impress someone or treat myself. Globe is just a pick up place now that is opened in the Loop. Plus, the people who go there are always white when I arrive, so that fuels my bias.

Smugglers is the best lunch spot in the city for someone with quality and quantity in mind. The salad bar and their baked half chicken is one of the best meals in the city. I am a bachelor and don't cook all that often due to sloth, so fresh salads and veggies are important. I fill up on those and take the majority of the chicken to go. The steaks and the prime rib, I have found better. Caesars is a way better steakhouse, so is the cattle baron. But for a well priced lunch that fills you up, smugglers is underrated.

The Laurier? (buddy's with martin, solid dude solid menu)

someone mentioned it but what about la dolce vita? my grandma lives across the street from there and I used to work there and try to wheel franco's daughters...smoke shows...both of 'em... Franco has classic northern italian cuisine and that guy rakes in the dough. Rich white people love the show he puts on.

Wild Ginger is nice.

The garlic clove is an incredible and quaint/cozy experience.

What about bookers? (mmm key lime pie)

I'm kind of shocked nobody has mentioned the Bluehouse Cafe on Northmount Dr. N.W.

It's very small so a reservation is a must but the food,service and ambience is top notch. they have a big menu, everything from fresh seafood to a mean prime-rib. prices are actually quite good as well.

IMO, it's the best kept secret for good food in Calgary.

Towa is good, Globefish is good, but they're completely different styles. Towa is steroid-infused cuts of fish and food that is oversized and nice looking. The fish is fresh, the menu has good variety, the rice is average. Their food and their decor is similar - it all looks like it belongs in an IKEA. And that is not a negative slight, I love IKEA.

Globefish is more japanese fusion, izakaya style sushi - straying away from sushi in the traditional sense and trying things that are different. Lounge-style japanese snacks.

Neither of these places are a good representation of what sushi SHOULD be, but Towa is closer to it.

They appeal to different preferences. I can appreciate both.

I actually had steak at the keg last night and I can't really say I've had a better one in Calgary. I've had plenty of steaks all over town in all price ranges and I have to say I'm not understanding the hate-on for the keg.

Globefish for sushi is still my favorite ... it is one of the few things I really miss about living in the north.

you got lucky ...

im not saying the Steak sucks, I am saying for a place that advertises itself as the place for steak, I find their steaks (and service) doesnt live up to the expectations or price.

For a place that has a bit of everything - done well - Murrieta`s on 8th Ave & 1st Street is very good. A bit pricey, but worth it IMO.

I don't think anyone in this thread has mentioned FARM on 17th. Sort of difficult to explain... European influenced farmhouse cuisine. It's affliated with Janice Beaton cheeses, and the ingredients here are top notch. Portions are sort of confusing... you can get very small plates of cheeses or charcuterie for $8, which will leave you feeling a little gyped, and then get an amazing and hearty macaroni and cheese for $12, (or similarly priced ribs) which seems like a great deal, given the quality of the flavours and preparation. So it probably also balances out, but if you have a big appetite, not everything on the menu is going to fill you up. Very nice and unusual beer selection, and I'm told their wines are pretty good.

Used to go there (when the parents were paying) in the early 90s. Great food, and the staff was excellent. Always felt like part of the family when we went there. Haven't been in about 15 years though. Nice to hear that it's still around.
