My absolute favorite is nothing special but I just can't get enough of Thai over the past few years. Ruan Thai on 11th Ave close to 14th St.

Salt and Pepper has been terrible. Los Mariachis is good, but a bit expensive, that being said, it's the only decent (actually really good) Mole in town.

another awesome place for italian and excellent wine is Zia's Enoteca. its in the bottom of the arriva building. amazing italian food and wine. and since we're on the subject of the arriva building....if anyone loves wine as much as i do, 100 wines (also in the bottom of the arriva building) is awesome. they hand pick all the wines they bring in there, and they keep records of what you bought so that when you are looking for something new, they can tell what would suit you by what you've bought in the past.
also their reciepts have tasting notes on the wines you buy. pretty awesome.

The trick with El Mariachi is to go there at lunch. You can get the "El Trio" (Enchilada, Taco, and Burrito) for $10, and they bring you chips, salsa, and spicy marinated veggies as an appetizer. Not bad for $10. At supper time, the same meal is like $15 or $16.
Service at El Mariachi can be tough at lunch, but that's because there's only the one guy there serving, and, unlike Salt and Pepper, he isn't intentionally ignoring you, he's just really busy.

you must be refering to cougars and blow. That's all this place has to offers. Women who need you to clean the cobwebs from the rafters. Old brawds would rather put out then be put out to the pasture (thank you Bloodhound Gand). I am serious, everytime i go there it is a cougar and cocaine-fest.

I have one question about the lounge wait staff at Joeys Chinook. Do they double as dancers at the Speakeasy (2 blocks over) on their breaks. If not, why do they dress like strippers? Not that I'm complaining, it's the only reason I'd ever eat there.

A couple good places:
Italian - La Dolce Vita in Bridgeland.
Vietnamese - Indochine Bistro in Kensington (although most vietnamese is basically the same)
Sushi - Globefish
Mexican - Village Cantina in Inglewood
Greasy pub food for dirt cheap - Moose McGuires
But nothing beats cookin steak on the BBQ with a few beers to wash it down.

Wow there are too many suggestions to comment on. Yet, I say we are soooo lucky with all the cultural diversity we enjoy here.
It depends what you want:
Indian? Glory of India is awesome. The Samosa Garden is the best proprieator in the business. If you get a chance to meet her, her name is Zarina and is a total treasure. Her Hubby's name is Zeul and is a bright and wise man. They were nothing but family by proxy while I frequent that spot.
Viet? SOO many. Commercial and popular? I like Pha Kim. They opened right beside another dude but their satay soup was so good they named the place Pha Kim. I used to live in Radisson and Forrest lawn, so I know about Jays(it has a new name) supermarket and the spot right beside the sev there is incredible.
Chinese? Too many. I love too much wester influenced chinese food yet this style thrives in this city. Hmm. China Town, Silver Dragon for Dim Sum. U and Me for late night hot spot. I like the forbidden city at franklin (pacific centre mall now). I am sometimes the only 'gwai-lo' in the spot. There is the Peking garden off varsity and shaganappi. So busy but so worth it. Splurge at lunch for the war won ton. Bang!!
Japanese?? I like a few fav's. Towa is the best and better than Zen 8 if it hasn' t closed down already. Sushi Kawa is a great authentic feel and I love the sumo wrestling while I eat. I like Sakana grill for the cheap love boat. Sushi bbq in when I go with my buddies from the stamps. And yes, Japanese villiage is perfect for a special occaison for not a lot of time to prepare. They're always good to go.
African?? Marathon is popular. The Sultan's tent was the coolest ambience in the city. It was Moroccon cuisine. The best African cuisine is probably NE or in E town or back in Montreal.
Nepalese? The one spot by 14th st and 17th ave sw. I tried its victuals at the taste of calgary show. Which I will discuss later.
European? Italian? Spanish? French? German? Polish? Portuguese?
Well if I should be enveigled so as to continue then yes I will go further.
Contemporary, fusion, classic pub, micro-brewrey,?
South and Central American? Brazillian, Mexican, tex-mex,?
NA cuisine? Bakery's. Sandwich shops. Big Rock's Brewrey. Burger joints. 24 diners?
point is there are so many and we are truly spoiled. I have so many favourites and am probably financially weaker for the sake of it, but for the savior faire it has all been worth it.
PS, the river side cafe is money for dates. I take 'em for dinner and a movie at eau claire, then desert after a stroll through prince's island after sundown. it's better than a horror movie as far as tolerable suspense is concerned, get's the blood racing.

Globefish has the best sushi in the city, hands down (and I've eaten at over a dozen different Calgary sushi restaurants).
For contemporary fine dining, I like Muse in Kensington or Vintage Chophouse downtown.
Pulcinella in Kensington has really amazing authentic Napoletana pizzas -- worth checking out when you feel like something up-scale but don't want to spend $50+ per person.
River Cafe is highly over-rated, IMO. You pay a hefty price premium for the (admittedly awesome) atmosphere and location, but the food is merely so-so as far as fine dining goes. Great place to take a date, though; my wife and I had our first dinner date there.

Globefish better than towa? if I am gonna spend the money that globefish wants me to drop, I'd rather go with more bang for my buck. Have you seen the size of the pieces fish there? Insane...
