Wow no love for the gorilla. I voted monkey but thinking about it, I really should have voted Polar Bear. A fully grown Polar bear standing up is over 10 feet tall, he would b.tch slap the monkey around like a rag doll, then eat it's face.
One of the polar bears biggest challenges here is the Walrus. The walrus can weigh up to 4500lbs. It's bigger and has super sharp teeth. Sometimes the bear wins and sometimes not.
You can use this as a comparison to give you an idea of the kind of weight a polar bear can handle.

But it rarely goes after a bull walrus, it preys on the children and weak ones. I know there's a youtube video of a polar bear killing a bull, but that's a rarity
There's also videos of adult walruses being bitten by polar bears and pretty much walking it off (and I know, a big exaggeration and the walruses are pretty much 3000lbs of blubber to protect against the polar bear). But what actually happens in the fight? The gorilla isn't going to give it clear slash or bite to the throat, it's going to be swinging at the bears head, and smashing it hard, if it bites it's chest, the gorilla gets a couple huge blows in that I don't see a polar bear being able to live because of the brain damage. That's not to say it dies instantly, but I don't know, I think if we're assuming this happens in the wild, one might out survive the other, but both die because of the injuries.
People are putting way too much emphasis on weight. The arm/shoulder muscles of a gorilla would pose huge problems for the polar bear. You don't just get clubbed by a fist 5 times the size of a human hand and keep chuggin' along. Polar bears fight sea based creatures primarily, and they do it on land. That means 2 things: the creatures they fight are large and slow. A gorilla is by no means small, but it can move around extremely fast. It's not a clear cut victory for either of the two, but I can't see how so many people are dismissing the gorilla's chances like this.
Wow, a lot of compelling evidence in this thread. But I have to go with the polar bear. I think the polar bear playing with dogs videos is just a cover for the animal. It wouldn't really be close I don't think.
Logically, I'd say the bear. It has a better offensive and defensive arsenal. Still, I'm not so sure. Might makes right as the saying goes, and the gorilla is mighty mighty. I figure the bear would win about 3 out of 4 throws, but the if the gorilla gets a good haymaker in it would lights out. Kind of like a big linebacker fighting a biker decked out in his road leather and packing a knife. The biker is going to win that bout most times, unless the 375 pound linebacker connects with a good one early.
If the sliver back can use rocks, branches or any other thing in it's environment I call a victory for the gorilla, if not the polar bear takes it after a valiant fight by the gorilla.
A polar bear would defeat a silverback gorilla every time. The only thing the gorilla has is it's strength. The polar bear weighs three times as much, is probobly stronger, and has massive claws and teeth.
I think I'd take the polar bear over two or even three silverbacks. Seriously, one on one it wouldn't even be close.
