Lets take this one step at a time:
  • First thing, go into Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections. What do you have listed there for interfaces? NOTE: You should be connected to your router with an ethernet cable when you do this.
  • DOUBLE CLICK on the Ethernet interface and check the properties. It should say "connected."
  • Switch to the "Support" tab and check what it has listed there for "Address Type", "IP Address" etc..
  • If it say "No connection", try right clicking and selecting "repair."
  • Also, let us know what other interfaces are listed. In my picture I have a 1394 interface. You may also have some sort of USB modem interface lsited.
Here's a screen snapshot of what I'm talking about: http://i43.tinypic.com/209fs6q.jpg

Vista will be a little different, you may have to switch to Classic view... sorry, I'm not a Vista user.

I'm on XP, not vista.

I have the following in network connections:

Intel(R) 82562V 10/100 network connection

Motorola Surfboard (this is the modem)

In the support tab for the NIC it says manually configured. Says connected in the properties tab.

Also, in the main network connections window, the NIC is connected and firewalled, while the modem is connected, shared and firewalled.

Any red flags?

you cant connect both a usb and ethernet to the shaw cable modem, check to see if lights are even flashing on ur pc ethernet port when u connect to ur router. In fact you should ditch the router and connect straight from cable modem to computer first using ethernet

Yes, we've established this...but I can't access the internet without the usb cable at this point. It's not shaw anyway, but I'm sure it's the same down here.

If I ditch the router it kind of defeats the purpose of having a wireless home network, no?

Ah, maybe you mean get the modem working right before adding the router...my apologies if that's the case.

well thats the steps you should take to diagnose a problem pretty simple to split things up and see what the source of your problems are if it works its your router or connections to/from it. If not its ur computer not taking an ip address and go from there. You can also use the cable that u previously used to connect modem to router and that would eliminate that being a problem since it did give you internet to your wireless clients

That's the red flag right there. You need to reset it so that it uses DHCP rather than manual configuration. If you click on the "Support" tab, what does it list there?

Also:
  • Select Properties for your NIC.
  • Click on TCP/IP and select Properties.
  • The Properties should show as in the attached screen snapshot.

Second possible red flag. If you have internet connection sharing enabled on your USB modem, you should turn that off.

OK..I think I've got everything solved. I have internet. My daughter can see our network on her laptop. Now....

When she tries to connect to our network it prompts her for a username and password. How can I either bypass that or set it up for her?

THANKS SO MUCH!!

Glad to hear you've got it sorted out.

As for your daughter's laptop, I'm assuming this happens when she attempts to connect wirelessly?

What are the current wireless settings on your router? See page 12 of the instruction manual:

Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser. After entering your admin name/pw. Click on "Wireless Security" in the blue bar and take note of your username, password, security type (which you may or may not need, depending on her OS).

When I type the default IP address for the router into the address bar in IE or Firefox I get search page results for the address....as if I had googled it.

Strange?

Installing the 'easy link advisor' software that came with the router. That should do the trick.

Thanks again guys.

When you open the support tab for your ethernet card, what does it say your gateway is?

See: http://i43.tinypic.com/209fs6q.jpg

(Note: In the above screen snapshot, you have to double click on the connection, do not select "properties" as indicated in the screen shot, as that is wrong.)

If it begins with 192.... , then type that address in your web browser. If it begins with something else, then either you may have your DHCP server turned off on your router or your modem is connected to a LAN port on the router.

I'm still not there, but I can access the router settings page now. The performance (speed) on the internet now took a huge nosedive. Not happy with that at all.

Just ran a connection diagnostic and the error that came up was that I had 2 connections. Disabled the NIC card in my Network connections and everything is fine now.

How is that possible?

VICTORY IS MINE!!!!

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the help. I think the main problem was that I had some pitfalls built in to my system that were working for me with just one computer that weren't ideal. (That USB cable).

In the end, I realized that the modem is OUTSIDE my network and that I didn't need to have it as one of my network connections. The only reason it was showing up there was because of the stupid USB cable which I had completely forgot about after diving into the meat of the situation. Also inadvertantly switch my cables up at one point too. What a maroon!

Thanks again for everyone who offered their help. My frustration level was at an all time high!

Oh man, thought we'd all told you to ditch that USB cable way back on page one. Nonetheless, glad you've got it all sorted it out now!

Yeah, but I couldn't access the internet without it until I had the router set up right. Was kind of a viscious circle type of thing. Then I forgot about it.
