Ian Schultz gets hit in the face unpenalized more than anyone in the league. He'll be plenty ugly before he gets to the NHL.

Aaaaand done. So much for that "BOA."
Brandon also sweeps Kootenay, negating any travel problems that might have otherwise surfaced.

Well, the real BOA in the Dub is Calgary-Red Deer or Medicine Hat-Lethbridge. Edmonton still needs to figure out where to fit.
Great crowd in Edmonton tonight - nearly 7000. That's a walkup of about 5000 fans. Jung was outstanding, and the Oil Kings played with a ton of heart, but they were badly overmatched, and it showed.
Onto round two, and either Lethbridge, Medicine Hat or Swift Current.

Jung tries his best once again to keep his team in it, but in the end the class of the Hitmen shows through. Those two goals 33 seconds apart in the third basically killed any glimmer of hope the Oil Kings may have had, especially the one the dribbled through Jung.
As the Fan broadcast wouldn't connect for me, I was forced to listen in on the Oil Kings broadcast. I just have to give a compliment to the Edmonton broadcasters, as hard as it is to acknowledge anything positive in relation to Edmonton. They were nothing but complimentary with regards to the Hitmen, large parts of the third period were spent discussing just how good this Hitmen team, organization, and players are. Both broadcasters also openly admitted that despite the obvious built in dislike of a Calgary team, they would be be cheering for the Hitmen for the rest of the postseason. Given the rivalry, it was very nice to hear such compliments and statements.

I really don't see the Oil Kings as a rival.

I should have phrased that a little better. I was referring to the rivalry between the two cities, not necessarily between the two teams themselves. As stated earlier, the WHL Battle of Alberta at this point is confined from Red Deer south. I believe the actual quote from one of the announcers was something along the lines of "As much as I hate to cheer for any Calgary team, having been born in Edmonton, I'm cheering for this Hitmen team, at least for the rest of this year."
My apologies for the confusion.

Just a quick question, what was the reason that Sonne didn't go tonight? I heard a quick snippet that he wasn't going to play in the game, but I never caught the actual reason as to why.

Couple other series also ended last night. Kelowna swept Kamloops and the Giants swept Prince George.
Tough luck about the Ice, but they were outmatched. Foucault was cut at the beginning of this season, not sure why though but glad to see he's doing well in Calgary.

Foucault strikes me as a player who just slid well into the system. He's a cog in the wheel, and is finding success as a result. Just another one of those cases of everything Kisio and Lowry touching this year turning into gold.

I had heard that Foucault didn't like being so far from home, and Canmore was a lot more palatable. When he got traded to his hometown team, it was a no-brainer to join the them.

The Edmonton play by play team was saying something about how the Hitmen had to basically convince him to come back and play in the WHL, so I'm not sure if it was a no brainer, but playing for the home team certainly would be a factor.

This was likely speculation from a blog, but a trip from Cranbrook to Calgary isn't quite the day excursion that a trip from Canmore to Calgary is. But considering he did play for Swift Current for a while, the travel probably wasn't it.

On the topic of Foucault, there was an excellent article from the Sun's Scott Fisher about him today, dealing with everything from his days in Kootenay, to his time in Canmore, and his transition and success with the Hitmen. With regards to leaving Kootenay, his comments are pretty telling:
Quote:
"Yeah, from being a healthy scratch in Kootenay, and then being sent home, it's been quite a change," said Foucault, who leads the Hitmen with four goals in the post-season.
The 6-foot, 190-pounder said it was hard to sit in the pressbox in Cranbrook.
"It always feels like somebody saying stuff behind your back," he said. "It doesn't feel like you're a part of the team.
"You're just kind of there in case somebody gets injured.
"It's not a good feeling."
|
He comes across as an extremely level headed and down to earth young man who found himself in a no win situation, and then took advantage of the chance he was given with the Hitmen.
Quote:
Coming here, I didn't expect to have any ice time at all," he admitted. "I hoped to get into one or two playoff games and show what I could do.
"But Dave (Lowry, head coach) has given me an awesome opportunity and I have to thank him for that."
But for all his newfound success, Foucault insisted he's not finished trying to prove himself.
"I haven't proved anything yet," he said.
"I haven't proved I can play in this league. I just proved I got lucky a few games and got a few bounces.
|
Overall, an excellent article, and a great story of a young man who just kept working hard until he found the success he was looking for.
