Leland Irving is still playing in the WHL, and there has been not too much talk about the Flames first round pick for 2006. He turns 21 next month, and as far as I know has yet to even play in the AHL. Is he a bust? Or a late bloomer?

Not only is he playiing the AHL he's had a very strong rookie season. His development is right on track so far.

I think he plays another year in the AHL next year, then competes for a back-up spot the year after. Probably 4-5 years away from being a starter in the NHL...which is perfect in terms of timing for the Flames.

Big fan of Irving.

No big deal - finding out what's happening with certain prospects is one of the reasons we have this board. Can't expect everyone to follow prospects religiously.

yeah, i think irving will certainly be well served by another year with no nhl worries. assuming he continues to develop, maybe he could start getting callup time the year after that. i think this year he has been everything that he was expected to be. a young, talented rookie who has potential but is certainly going to have growing pains as he learns the new level of play.

4th year hes going to be pushing Kipper for the starting job. 5th year its his barring injury.

One of the reason I like CP. I follow Draft Day, and then the only place I hear a decently steady stream of follow-up news is on CP.

It's a shame that Brent Krahn didn't ever develop into the star goalie the Flames were hoping on him to be.

To be blatenly honest, I think Krahn was a "feel-good" draft pick.

1. He played for the Hitmen
2. He's from Calgary (born in Winnepeg) but played minor hockey here with my cousin, thats how I know

I had the pleasure of talking to Leland's Minor hockey coach in Swan Hills, weekend before last.
My Minor Hockey team was up there for a tournament.
Anyhow, Lelands a great kid, who was very sick as a child, read a form of cancer from what I could gather. Even through treatments, Leland was wanting to play hockey. In fact at one point he begged the coach to let him play during one season's playoffs.
His brother Kirk, I believe is his older brother, was also a goaltender in Swan Hills.
The arena in Swan Hills isnt much to look at but its a great ole barn as far as I concerned. There are two pictures over top of the concession that show Leland in his team Canada jersey and there are a couple of pics of him as an Atom Player in the trophy showcase.
From what I can tell, Swan Hills is some sort of a goaltending farm. the team that we went up against had an awesome goaltender at the age of 11. Our games were always very tight and typically 1 goal affairs.

Scouting staffs don't select players based on how much of a "feel-good" story it would be or how much nice PR it might make more a day or two. Krahn was rated in the first round.

I think it was pretty apparent at the time that new GM Craig Button was not in favour of the pick at all but was helpless to prevent it as Calgary had to give their draft list to Dallas that year in order to get Button before the draft.

People are surprised that I know who the Flames call-ups are, and have an idea how they have been playing (thanks in large part to the QC contributors).

And I feel like I know nothing compared to a bunch of posters here (I have no idea how Reggie Dunlop, for one, can keep track of so much).

I think it really depends on what type of season you get from Irving next season. If he is amazing and lights it up and it looks like the challenge isn't there for him, i could see him in the NHL as soon as the 2010/2011 season. mainly becuase I don't see Kipper as a guy that can maintain 70 ish games for much longer. I think its this year, and next and then you'll want him bumped down to the 60 game range. So Irving would see a decent amount of games.
Or if he is good, but not spectacular, you lave him in the A for two more full seasons and then bring him up. Either way, the Flames are in a good position becuase I defiently believe they have the real deal in Irving.
