Your buddy or his stepmom are lying, or using 'borrowed' humor. This originated from the book Freakonomics.

I knew a Bradley Bradley and a Carol Carol. The first one on purpose..the second was by marriage, carol sommers married bill carol. Another weird thing, my husbands cousins (males) were Gale and Lori and they married Gayle and Laurie. No kidding either. A friend named her kid Camebridge (a girl), what was she thinking?

It's weird that they married girls with the same name, but I think it's weirder that a boy was named after a severe windstorm. And that a boy was given a straight-up girl's name.
The weirdest names I've encountered are Tetris (for a girl), Ireland (for a girl with, of course, an Irish last name), and String (for a boy). I have yet to find a name that matches String for sheer idiocy, even counting horrible misspellings like Keightlyn.

Why don't parents give their kids old lady names anymore? Mable, Phyllis, Doris, Beatrice.... what ever happened to those?
I'm totally going to name my kid Winifred or something... haha.

4x4's kid is totally going to beat up your kid and take his lunch money
Worst name I've heard was in high school: Harry Dong
If I have a son, I want to name him Pablo. Such a hilarious name and I'd never get bored saying it.

Duke is an awesome name. Nobody in the history of the world named Duke has been anything but the ultimate badass.
edit - unless your name is actually Margrave or Count, or maybe just Sir. Sir would just suck, you'd be turning around expectantly a million times a day whenever someone in the vicinity said, "Sir? Excuse me, sir?"

In the electronic age, for ease of signing your name to e-mails... Qwerty would be a good handle.

Here's an interesting one: a pregnant friend of my sister in law decided to divulge her baby name to a friend she works with. This friend then went on a rant about how she's not allowed to name her child that because it's a horrible name. The name was Annabelle. Is that really a terrible name? I kind of like it. Is ripping on a somewhat normal name like that really kosher? I would feel like a turbo ###### saying something like that.
I've heard some friends announce what they'd like to name their kids and there are many times that I thought it was kind of a strange choice, but I'd never think to actively try and change their minds about it.

I had a friend who named her new dog Chloe after finding out that one of her best friends wants to name her daughter that as she was just a couple months away from delivery.
Needless to say, they are no longer friends
