Everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down.
This is not an international incident. Its not even a big deal. Doesn't Peter Mackay have anything better to do? I know Coderre doesn't, but still...
Its called free speech. It unfortunately allows idiots to say whatever they want. Funny, we can hurl insults south on a daily basis, on GOVERNMENT SPONSORED TV programs, and no one says a word. Yet, one crackpot says something disparaging about Canada on a privately funded TV, and people start losing their minds. Grow up.
Tell my cousin to grow up. He's currently patrolling the Panjwaii district in Afghanistan - the birthplace of the Taliban. There are so many rockets hitting this area that our troops now refer to it as the "catcher's mitt". I can't begin to even imagine what it has been like for him to say farewell to good friends of his that have died during his tour there. But hey, it's not big deal to you that someone else makes fun of it.
Every time I see or hear about our men dying in Afghanistan, my heart stops and I pray that it is not him this time. And when I find out it's not him I feel relieved. But that quickly turns to guilt as my celebration means another loved one's sorrow.
But hey, like you said: no big deal.
It’s not only my cousin who’s risking his life, it’s also the rest of us who love him dearly. We face the risk of not having him in our lives should he fall during his tour. So when some insensitive ass makes irresponsible comments (regardless of free speech or whether it is supposed to be humour), I have a right to be angry. Because it’s a slap in a face to what my family is sacrificing. What he, his wife, and his dear children may stand to lose should something happen.
This should be honoured and defended. And I think Peter Mackay (and Coderre) understands this and he’s standing up for my cousin and the rest of the brave men and women serving our country as well as their families. And when it comes to something like this, In my mind it’s NO he doesn’t have “anything better to do”.
You might not think it’s a big deal, but I do.

Its a SATIRE! Its not meant to be taken seriously. Its really on the same level of depravity as Family Guy. If you take it seriously, its disgusting how they make fun of US soldiers, horrible world events, etc. But its not meant to be serious.
Was it in poor taste, absolutely. Did I laugh? nope. But do we as a society really have such a thin skin, but yet have no issue attacking the US? We made fun of the Iraq conflict daily. Yet, no one in Canada stopped to think of the American families being broken apart, or the pain the Iraqi civilians were going through. It was fun to say, "ha ha stupid americans" and call it "vietnam 2." True as it may be. Canada is also incapable of defending its own borders. It hurts to say that, considering that the troops we do have are absolutely top-notch. But its true too. They like making fun of that fact. We like making of fun of them. Why can't we leave it at that?
Everyone is aware that in reality, anyone serving abroad under any flag is doing a great service. My friend served in Afghanistan for 8 months, and you get very nervous watching the news. I totally understand and empathize with that sentiment.
On another day, they're making fun of Gitmo, or Abu Ghraib, or something else. They make fun of their own troops. They've lost significantly more people in the Middle East too. It makes them morons for sure, but its just a stupid TV show.
It's trash TV. Its not worth our politicians making mountains out of molehills. I'm surprised they didn't protest South Park's "Canada on Strike" episode (or the ones where Saddam takes over Canada). It was a far more deep-rooted attack on Canadian culture and attitude, and yes, even a few shots at the military were in there. Maybe the difference is, that was actually funny.

Just because the US doesn't care about it's own troops doesn't mean we don't care about ours. I can't think of any Canadian show *good or bad) that makes fun of our mission or our troops.
I'm glad they had to apologize for trash tv.

I wouldn't say they don't care about their troops, they don't mind pushing people's buttons to get a cheap laugh. Canada used to make fun of the army all the time. For example, people died in those defective Sea King helicopters, but we still made fun of their crappiness.
I should make it clear, I don't support these guys. They're morons. However, all we're doing by bitching and complaining is coming off like hypocrites and giving these losers more publicity than they deserve. I bet their viewership is up a lot, especially in Canada, just to see what these jokers are all about.

I understand they're comedians trying to get a laugh through ignorance. But our soldiers have died there in a conflict the US instigated and then all but abandoned for their hard-on for Iraq. The thing I find most insulting in the program is the "Canadian soldiers are a bunch of sissies who need a break" when we've been holding the fort in the Afghanistan. It's a real slap in the face. I don't think they'd run a comedy piece about American soldiers dying; are the lives of our soldiers worth less?

Well, the US do have roughly 50% (35,000) of the troops in Afghanistan, so its hardly abandoning the place. Canada, while doing well for our relative size (and disgusting condition in which the Liberals left the armed forces) account for roughly 8% (2850 at last count). Roughly the same as France and Italy, but less than Germany, and far less than the UK and the US. (which shocked the hell out of me, frankly)
It is alarming that the CF have to take a step back in 2011 though. However, this says NOTHING about the gumption, professionalism and integrity of the troops, simply that they've been treated poorly by previous governments and they are simply underfunded/manned.
Not to take away from the fact those guys were morons. I just don't think they deserved the enjoyment of offending Canadians to the point of us feeling the need to complain about it. They simply aren't that important.

when people make fun of the iraq war they make fun of bush, what an idiot for starting this war etc.. etc.. No one says haha american troops are dying for nothing its funny. Which is basically what they said to us.
Yes we make fun of them, oh they dont know where Canada is on a map haha. Rick Mercer takes quotes out of context to make them seem dim. They make fun of us for being afraid of the dark, all in good fun. But making fun of soilders, calling them sissies, putting their life on the line everyday is over the line.
btw, someone brought up South Park, the writers are Canadian so nothing we can do
On a day when we lost four more members this idiot goes on the air with this? And no its not satire, satire comes from knowledge on the subject, Gutfeld is an idiot going for cheap laughs, and he has some responsibility on a major news network to at least know a bit about the subject that he's lampooning.
It wasn't comedy, it wasn't satire it was ignorance and misleading and ignorant.
Bottom line, if I came out on CBC news and made the connection between civilian casualties in Iraq and American Soldiers being blood thirsty murders, or on December 7th called Pearl Harbour a negative vertical retreat by the cowardly U.S. Navy I would be doing the same thing to American's that Gutfeld and Fox did to us.

I try not to over react when some canadian political jokes come up from the American news stations but I just can't stand this one, making light of the death of those brave men just makes me sick.
As for FOX news...we are talking about a network that employes Glen Freaking Beck!

I've heard that one of those ###### bag comedians on that BS panel is scheduled to be performing at some comedy club in Edmonton in the beginning of April. I have 2 very close friends who are currently stationed at the base in Edmonton with their regiment awaiting deployment into Afghanistan.
I would NOT want to be that fool when he walks onto that stage and sees that the entire room is PACKED with the "manicured, landscape painting, capri-frolicking" Canadian Military he so distastefully slammed on that godawful show.

Cheers Pal, Good Luck....
His booking was cancelled, supposedly for the safety of the patrons.....yeah right.

I don't want to offend anyone but while I understand why you're upset your cousin didn't join the Armed Forces to become a martyr, so stop making him into one.
I really do understand that topic at hand may be offensive to you, but I hear far to often the "I/My friend/My brother is in the Armed Forces, therefore he's this great hero and could die at any time and you better all worship the armed forces".
I really get it that he's doing something brave but the bottom line is he CHOSE to do it. And while that doesn't make insulting the Armed Forces ok, I think a lot of people need to step back and realize that people in the Armed Forces are just that, regular people.
I know Calgary Police don't have IED and rockets shot at them every day but how come there isn't a friggin "poor CPS" thread every time someone complains about the cops. Or what about humanitarians in Africa? I would go on but I'm almost certain I'll get flamed for this so I'll just stop now. All I'm going to say is that you are only a true hero if you don't expect recognition. These people didn't go over there for the praise, or the pity or to become martyrs. Let's keep it that way. They are just regular folk, nothing else.
Well, I won't jump on you but to say that I respect ALL public servants....whether its the police, military, members of government, etc, etc. And I respect all humanitarians who are doing their best to try and improve the conditions in 3rd world countries around the world.
Doesn't mean I have to degrade someone else's service in the military though.
