Hey Tim,
I'm just wondering. If I hold an Alberta License, am I allowed to purchase a car in Ontario? I know that I will not be able to register it as a car in Ontario (putting ON plates on there) without an Ontario license, but can I just purchase the car without registering it (IE, leaving it at the hands of the dealers) until I switch my license to an Ontario one and register the vehicle then?
I don't know if my question makes much sense, but if you need it to be cleared up, I'll do my best.
Thanks a bunch!

Thought i might bump this up from the dead again as there seems to have been a number of car related threads lately..
As always i am happy to try and help out. I am sure Sample would chip in with advice as well.

If a new SAAB was being sold at a killer price do you think it would be worth the risk? Or are SAABs doomed?

When will the new Mazda 3s be on the road?
I've gotta say, I like the original a whole lot (and just bought one last summer). It'll be weird to see this new design as commonplace in a few years.

The 2010 Mazda 3s are already on the road. I've already seen a few in the Ottawa area
Personally as an owner of a Mazda 3, I say the new one only looks good when it's with a darker color... that way the GIANT smiley face isn't as noticeable. Other than that I much prefer the old one.

I'm thinking about buying a G8 (the 3.6L) in a few months. With GM's struggles, what price do you think a dealer would be willing to give me on one?
What about the GT 6.0L?
Thanks Tim.

Hi Tim (or anyone else that knows)..
If my family has a car in Calgary and I want to bring it to California, is it complicated? Approximately how much does it cost and what is involved? Im thinking of getting my dad's SUV (my mom can't drive it anyways, and my dad passed away)...but I'm not sure how complicated/expensive it is.
It's a 2008 Lexus RX 350 with very low mileage (prolly like 5000-7500 kms)...my dad got it in Feb and then was diagnosed with cancer in April, and passed away this past January and it hasn't been driven much.
Thank you in advance for your help.

They're being spun off. Who knows if they'll survive on their own.

Tim (and Axel -- and anyone else who wants to chime in for that matter ),
I'm just in the process of completing a private sale on a vehicle, which, assuming the inspection checks out as clean (everything else has), will be at a pretty good discount off of "book value".
My question is -- what is the "going rate" for used cars vis-a-vis "book value" these days? I'm just curious as everyone I've talked to says "it's a great time to buy a car" because of the recession and everything -- any tangible numbers or other anecdotal information you can share?

I have a question. What is with Ford and 7.9% financing rate? Just about every other dealer I've talked to will give me, at worst, 3.9%.

I noticed that too, as I was looking at an 09 Fusion for under 20K new (with 6000 rebate).

great question.]
my partner and I were at the Adesa Auction in Edmonton last weekend.
We found that there is no rhyme or reason to anything that is selling through there, as far as price is concerned.
In reference to the black book...you might as well take the book and throw it out. some vehicles are bang on. some are so over the black book, its not even funny.
We have gotten to a point when we buy vehicles now, that we will guage them by the amount of bidding thats going on. Obviously the popular ones are going higher than black book and the not so popular ones are going well below black book.
If we think we can sell it, we'll buy it. Obviously we are still learning too but its a really unique time to be in the business.
Black book....schmack book. Right now, at bare minimum its a guideline only.
I find that Canada trader is a better guage for determining vehicle value.

I wish they would start bringing it back in again.. No Imediate plans from what i am aware of.. Problem is the US.. They are not big wagon buyers and we are pretty tied in with what the US wants. The GLK is what the US market wanted rather than the wagon so that is what we are stuck with for now.
I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago and the new wagon looks great though..

7.9 is still better than the car loan rate at th bank though.. The rates that the manufacturers charged are based on what is selling. If they have a hot model they don't need to give the rate away.. Also if it is a new model they generally have a higher rate at the begining as they have to havve some room to move once sales start to slow down on the model.. Can't introduce at 0% becasue you then have nowhere to go in 6 months when you need a boost.

Sample is right on.. black Book is a waste of paper.. It is out of date before it is even printed. We now use the actual sale values through the auction sites. The numbers change so wildly right now.
I will add that used car prices are actually on their way up.. There is a real shortage of good used stuff right now. as an example this time last year there was 2600 cars on the Adessa dealerblock.. right now there are about 1200
