Ever been ripped off by an ATM?
I went to my bank last night to deposit some cheques and withdraw a bit of cash. I asked for $200, but all I got was 4 $20s (I was expecting 4 $50s).
My receipt showed that I had indeed withdrawn $200 instead of the $80 that I received, so I called the bank's 800 number when I got home. The gal on the other end didn't seem terribly concerned, and said that my account will likely be corrected within 24 to 48 hours.
In my 20+ years of ATM use, this has never happened to me before. Anyone else?

This has happened to me. Difference was, I didn't get ANY money.
I called the number on the machine, same as you, and was told that they'd "look into it". It wasn't a huge amount, so I wasn't going to sweat over it too much, but sure enough, my account was refunded the amount. It wasn't a day or two though - more like a week or two.

Never been ripped off, but I have had an extra $20 come out of bar ATM's on two different occasions. I didn't call the bank. The drinks tasted better.

One time I was lined up for an ATM at the Back Alley, and the guy in front of me was getting real frustrated and kicked the machine and walked away. Instead of assuming the machine was broken, I assumed he was just broke, since he was at the Back Alley.
Anyway, just as I was getting up to the machine and about to put my card in, it spits out $300. Buddy was nowhere to be found.
I don't think I've ever left a bar so fast in my life.
But I don't really have any relevant advice for getting ripped off by the ATM. Just felt like sharing my story of good fortune and dishonesty.

I took out a hundred from an ATM once and it spit out a few extra bills. Thinking it was a good windfall I blew it at the bar. A few days later they corrected my account. S!!!
I wonder how they know those things make mistakes and which customer it made the mistake on.

Im sure his phone conversation with the bank went well.
"I tried to take out $300 from your ATM at a bar, late at night, and it never worked."
Bank: "Our records show you did indeed receive $300... nice try ######."

That's what I'm curious about also. In my case, I think I was supposed to get 4 $50s. I wonder if it has an optical sensor that records each bill as it goes by?

Not me, but my mom got jammed out of $200 last year at the bank machine at Walmart and it took mucho phone calls to get it straightened out, which I attributed to Wal-mart being an evil sub-criminal empire.
My buddy used to work on those machines and he had plenty of stories of people who tried to scam the system, and he explained that they do have sensors that 100% accurately count the bills and do know when bills are stuck together. However, if the denominations get mixed up when they are put into the machine (say there is a couple 50s sandwiched in the 20s) the machine doesn't know any better - or at least it didn't back in 2000-2001 when he was working with them.
