Default World Cup 2010 Tickets (Soccer)

Didn't see a thread on this, but as I know there are some soccer fans on here thought this might be of interest.

The first phase for tickets to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is open until March 31st. You can apply for tickets on a match by match basis or by a team basis. It's a lottery so it doesn't matter when you complete your application as long as it's before the end of the month. The draw will be held on April 15th.

Went to the last one in Germany in 2006 and it was a blast. Hopefully can get some tickets to some better games this time.

Footie!

Damn, I'd love to go and participate in some good ol English hooliganism, but alas, I have no funds to get to Africa.

Maybe I'll enter the draw just to get tickets and the sell them. *for face value in a foreign currency

Yeah unfortunately they ask for names and passport #'s which are printed on the tickets. Last time I went they didn't actually check ID unless you needed your ticket replaced. The tickets have RFID or something, so if that gets damaged you need to get a replacement ticket, which we had to do last time, and your passport has to match the ticket to get a new one.

There were a ton of scalpers still selling tickets at the games though at 8x the face value.

Is printing passport #s on tickets safe?

Yeah, I'd love to go, but Africa is a bit of a stretch.

I'm seriously considering saving money and making a go of WC 2014 in Brazil.

That'd be sweet. I may have some saving to do as well.

Is South Africa still happening? I remember hearing they had Australia as a backup plan because things were a little unstable in South Africa.

Haven't heard of any stability issues in S. Africa.

Maybe you're thinking of Zimbabwe?

My parents have a condo in Cape Town, so I should try to make the effort to get there. It's too beautiful a city to go for a short time, though. You just want to stay forever!

Ok I dug up some info and looks like it was more because planning and construction of stadiums may not be done on time, not necessarily social upheaval. Although it was a South African that told me there was some social problems going on that could affect things.

I guess no further news is good news and things are set to go in South Africa. Would be awesome to go.

Ya there were some fairly large concerns for a while, but they seem to have been largely dealt with. I'm still not certain that this tournament will go smoothly, but I imagine any problems will be solved by throwing money at them.

There are definitely a lot of social issues in South Africa, but the authorities will likely insulate the tournament from most of those.

The anti-scalping measures are a joke. After getting fleeced for $1500 for Euro tickets and then having FedEx lose them after I decided to re-sell them I'm a little bitter on how they run these things.

Would be good to go but the only 3 venues I'd be interested in would be Cape Town, Durban or Port Elizabeth.

I think they'll be overwhelmed and there will be a few major issues at this tournament. Good luck to anyone going to Joburg.

There was a lot of violence as recently as a year ago in the South African townships, mostly anti-immigrant violence, attacking cheap imported labour.

I just came back from South Africa (did a Cairo to Cape Town trip)... I'd be very, very surprised if the security situation was 'completely stable' come World Cup. The current crime rates in Cape Town and Johannesburg are obscene. In Jo'Burg you CANNOT walk outside of the main airport or train station, as there's a hefty chance you'll get mugged (met several travelers who had, guide book says the same thing). I was on a tour bus downtown Jo'burg and we drove into a full scale riot, had to turn around and 'miss that part of the tour'.

In Jo'Burg it's easier to kill you for your money than just robbing you... no witness, no hassle.

World Cup in 2010 will be very interesting indeed.

Yeah, there's always been violence in the townships. What I'm saying is even considering the violence South Africa is considered a "stable" country.

I did Cairo to Capetown and more in 1994 (hitched, bus, train) and it was the same then with the exception that Capetown was safe. Sad to hear it's gone Joburg's route as it really is a beautiful loation. Joburg has always been a murderous hole.

'Social problems' might be putting it mildly. It's the crime capitol of Africa.

Johannesburg's fearful reputation precedes itself, and visitors arriving for the first time are bound to brace themselves for the worst.
Take a look at any guide-book, and, frankly, you'd think twice about coming here.
"Violent crime is rampant," says one, "lots of guns" another.
I've lived, happily, in Lagos and Luanda, two African cities notorious for armed crime, but I still came to Johannesburg with a degree of apprehension.
On a continent of violent cities, Johannesburg, is, so they say, the worst of all.
Drive through the wealthy - predominantly white - northern suburbs, and you'll see high walls and electric fences, hiding houses which are in turn protected by alarm systems, metal grilles, and infra-red sensors.
This is the architecture of fear, and it is hard to feel relaxed in such an environment.

I guess one positive, if you can call it that, is that South Africa is still keeping homicide statistics. Can't be said for many African nations.

Well... to me 'stability' might mean something different. Sure there's no civil war or chance of being involved in miliatary-scale violence, but your chances of getting randomly stabbed or shot here are MUCH higher than places like Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda... even Kenya (Nairobi is called "Nairobbery" over there).

Nice to meet someone else who's done the trek... 1994 definitely would have been an interesting time to be over there. I went to the Rwandan Genocide memorial, that was still probably happening around the time you went.
