Basically, wife was in very early stages of pregnancy (6-7 weeks) and started having vaginal bleeding.

Went to our doctor and informed cow at reception that we'd like an emergency appointment (which he caters for). Cow asks why. We explain that we'd rather not discuss it with her and that it's an emergency. She rolls her eyes saying that she needs the info to determine if it's an emergency or not. Tell her that my wife is in early pregnancy and that she's bleeding. Cow replies that maybe she's just having her period. My wife explains that this is the third pregnancy and she knows the difference between a period and vaginal bleeding.

Ask to see the nurse, cow explains she's not in today and doctor is busy but she can make an appointment for next week. Finally ask her is she going to let the doctor know or not. Again she rolls her eyes treating us as some type of hypochondriacs and says that we don't constitute an emergency. We leave, just before doing so I get the last word in asking her what skills she has allowing her to triage patients. No reply. I inform her she better pray for a favourable outcome or I'm coming after her.

Go to a different walk in clinic. Explain all to another doctor. She tells my wife to go straight to hospital where she is diagnosed as miscarrying.

Return to cow with a photocopy of hospital report, tell her to read it and ask her WTF she thinks she is to diagnose what constitutes an emergency and deny access to doctor. Told her I'm coming after her and to start getting a story set up.

Honestly, no biggie re. the miscarriage. It was early days and we are already blessed with 2 beautiful boys. It's just the fact that these power hungry fools feel that they have the right to act beyond their skill set re. health matters that makes the whole system dangerous.

Apparently it worked too well. I just got an infraction for saying that Blaster knows nothing about hockey like most Canuck fans. He deserved it for being sarcastic when we were having an informative, semi serious discussion.

@Bagor:
First off, sorry about the miscarriage, you are probably infuriated about it, if not infuriated, at least saddened, nothing like losing a life before it is born and the toll it might have had on your wife as well.

The receptionist was probably a newbie with the way she acted. New on the job and thinks she knows everything... so many people are like that these days. Just because she is new, it still doesn't give her an excuse to not tell the doctor what it is. The doctor is definitely a better judge at what an emergency is better than she can I'll bet.

Cheers Steely. Honestly, the miscarriage we can live with. What will be will be, it was early and the body rejects babies for a reason. As I said we are already more than blessed with 2 healthy kids.

It's the whole concept of someone acting beyond their scope especially when it comes to healthcare that infuriates me. She's been there as long as I can remember and IMO had no business or qualifications whatsoever to deny us access to our doctor.

It's dangerous.

I think that is dangerous pretty much in any sort of industry, doesn't even have to be health care. it's just more dangerous in health care because you directly deal with potential life or death situations.

My wife and I had a similar situation at a specialist's office after my wife had surgery. In the week or two after my wife surgery she was still in a lot of pain. When phoning the doctor's office the receptionist and or nurse had kept telling her it was "normal" and that she had talked to the doctor etc. Needless to say, after about a month and a couple visits to our family doctor my wife finally got back into see her specialist who said that she had not heard anything from the staff, and that a few of the doctors at this clinic were talking about leaving the clinic because of the poor reception/nursing staff there.

@Bagor

Sorry about the miscarriage as well. And yes I agree that receptionist should be fired.

Yeah that's awful. If I was a newbie I'd send you straight to the doctor! Why would I want to take responsibility for anything!

Sorry about the miscarriage

Thanks to a Fan 960 I now wonder who would win in a fight: a Wookie or a Klingon?

Sorry to hear that Bagor!!

In another random thought, did you know it would take 2 days and 12 hours to walk from downtown Calgary to downtown Deadmonton?

So sorry Bagor about the miscarriage.

I agree with you too. It's not her responsibility or expertise to decide who needs help and who doesn't.

I like Edmonton's street numbering system in that it is easy to figure out where a particular address is.

I'll give you that. I never realized how hard parts of Calgary must be to get around on until I had some Edmonton area friends who moved there and brought up how in Calgary everything has a name not a number.

I was just watching the last episode of E.R. where George Clooney comes back and it really annoys me that Julianna Margulies was rattling off a list of places in Washington (they are supposed to be working in a Seattle hospital) and she said: "SpoCAINE" (like Patrick Kane) instead of Spokane (Spo-Can).

Things like this bug me to no end in TV shows and breaks my ability to suspend my disbelief. That nobody caught this error in the crew and they went with the line is just irritating to me despite the fact that I don't really give a damn about Spokane (but we have been getting all our American channels from there for years).
