Well I went and saw it this afternoon, I didn't think it quite lived up to the hype. Not a bad movie though, in fact it was pretty good.
A little weak at the end, but I won't say much more about that until more people have seen it.

I'm planning on seeing it sometime this week... can you tell us this, is the storyline (particularly the end) at all consistent with the original...?

The finish was a let-down, but everything up to it was pretty good.

Judging by the reactions, I'm guessing the ending is consistent with the book, which I thought was pretty weak.

Fantastic movie guys. Make sure you see it in theatures or else you won't really experience the whole effect without the big screen and sound.
9.5 / 10 here.

i thought it was very well done. There were little or no times when i thought the story was dragging along too much. Its definately worth seeing though. A couple scenes gave me deja vu from "Signs." My only beef was the ending, just too typical, but i suppose that follows the novel? I havent read it, so i wouldnt know. Overall, a great film.

The reviews aren't saying it's that great.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,161000,00.html
"But Paramount has a bigger problem this morning: very mixed to poor reviews, and no pre-sold-out shows in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, according to Moviefone.com."
""Unfortunately, 'War of the Worlds' is very disappointing and provides only minimal entertainment. The worst of the U.S. summer blockbusters thus far.""
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.d...EVIEWS/50606007
""War of the Worlds" is a big, clunky movie containing some sensational sights but lacking the zest and joyous energy we expect from Steven Spielberg. It proceeds with the lead-footed deliberation of its 1950s predecessors to give us an alien invasion that is malevolent, destructive and, from the alien point of view, pointless."
The ending is not as good as the original or as the novel. Given a million years to plan, according to the movie, you'd think the Martians would've prepared for this.

Is it me, or did the aliens look a lot like the aliens in ID4?
This could have been ID4 part 2.

It was similar to ID4, but whats the concept of the movie??? Aliens invading Earth to destroy everything.......of course its gonna be similar
But I liked it a lot better than ID4 for one reason, they didnt have boatloads of side characters. We didnt have the cliche military and presidential angle where one guy wanted to blow everything up and the other guy was more hesitant. This movie was great because it revolved around one character who experienced every aspect of the aliens. From the arrival, to the first attack to the ground troops to being captured by the aliens..............this was a great movie.....well when I say great...i mean entertaining......thats more appropriate.

It is Independence Day, but I don't understand why people call it "ID4".

i think they put the 4 in there because Independence Day is July 4th.....hence
Indepedence Day + July 4= ID4
side note: ID4 was never an official name for the movie, just an easier way to say for some
