One of the comments on the CBC article said that they probably auto deployed.
Guy said he used to work for Cougar Helicopters and made some educated guesses about what happened. He said that firstly, everyone is wearing a survival suit when being shuttled to an off shore rig. The suits are supposed to keep you alive for ~24 hours. But his guess as to why the chopper went down resulted in less of a soft landing and more of a "drop like a stone" in which case injuries, serious injuries, were likely just from impact.
Being groggy from hitting the water hard likely resulted in most of the crew sinking with the machine.
