Wow, that's pretty tiny. Thought my current Shuffle was small, that is unreal! Not a bad price either.

Why do people type it Ipod?
Screw Apple for constantly having to change these things. It's not so much innovation as making the Apple freaks buy more stuff because it's slightly different.

Same reason I see iPhone typed I-Phone all the time. Which is because Jesus hates me.

I've never really understood the shuffle. I know the draw is the size/money aspect, but the inability to directly select a certain song would drive me up the wall. I guess the playlist feature of this new one helps and the voice over is cool, but it's still nowhere near as functional as a screen.
When the shuffles were smaller in capacity you could get away with a little less navigation, but now that they are 4 gigs you could have hundreds of songs on there. I suppose you'd have to become a playlist champion.
edit: Also, I know it's stupid but I really miss Apples events. I damn near missed the imac, mac mini and mac pro updates. The least they could do is put on a black turtleneck and fire me a text message when they do stuff like this.

Well, I just made a 4GB playlist for my iPhone, and I can't say I've ever once selected a song, I just let it run. So this thing could be a godsend for when I'm at the gym. Not sure how I feel about the voiceover, could be really great or super annoying.
I also despise that I'd be stuck using the apple headphones, otherwise you can't really control the volume.

I think the Shuffle is an iPod of compromise. It's good for the gym, as it weighs basically nothing and already has a built in clip. However, you have to give up the song control. That can be a little frustrating. I'm a bit of an Apple geek and have three iPod to suit my needs. Basically, one for every occasion. I only take the shuffle to the gym and all of the songs fit my gym tempo, so I don't have to get too picky song-wise.
The voice over feature looks interesting. I guess they are trying it out on the shuffle to see how people respond and will eventually move it on to other/new models.
$79 for 4 gigs is a decent price.

Yeah, screw them. A company that gets consumers to buy their products. Why can't they just lose money like everyone else?

Some good news from Gizmodo for those who hate apple ear buds:

We have talked with Apple and they said that they will sell an adapter for third-party headphones—which solves the issue about picking any headphones, even if it is for an added cost.

I found one for my shure headphones that has a mic but no way to control the audio (skip track, pause etc.). If you are aware of any others I would love to hear! I had the apple remote years ago and absolutely loved it but it was rendered useless when they stopped making ipods without that chip thing next to the headphone jack.

From the link Mango put up

SmartTalk is now capable of acting as a microphone for your iPod, as well as track controls for music playback. This extra functionality will work with your 4th gen iPod nano, 2nd gen iPod touch, and 120GB iPod classic.

And after a quick look through reviews on the Griffin SmartTalk, apparently Monster offers a superior product.

With the iSoniTalk, there’s no fumbling with complicated controls or searching for the right button, because there’s only one! When you get an incoming call, simply press it to pause your music and take the call. When you’re done, press it again to hang up and resume your music. The iSoniTalk can also be used to pause and play music even when you don’t have an incoming call, so it’s convenient for a quick conversation or time out when you need to take a break from your music.

Not a bad update to the shuffle I suppose, but personally would never get one because I need a screen. Seems like it would be rather difficult to listen to a particular song or album by a particular band or something, you'd have to skip through until you found it. I guess its a good product for those who listen to their music in more of a random format all of the time, kind of like radio.
I really want to see a high capacity ipod touch, or an updated ipod classic.

Thanks for the link mango ... i may have to go with the Griffin as I have a deep hatred of all things monster.
edit: bah, those reviews are kind of damning for the Griffin. Perhaps I'll buy the monster adapter and just not tell anybody.

Not a problem. I don't think I would purchase anything Monster ever again, after dealing with an FM transmitter that I paid way too much for...long story.
I've found Griffin stuff to be decent. I own some of their portable iPod speakers and other odds and ends for my iPods. I've never had any issues. Belkin is also fairly good brand, where you're not breaking the bank.
