Basically my largest fear is the elevation change and pressurization is going to make them explode. The argument I've created for myself against this is that beer must go on airplanes all the time when being imported from other countries.... So, anyone tried it? I know the fragile handling part of things is another issue all together...

Since the aircraft is pressurized it will be fine.

The beer companies sell specially manufactured beers to airlines which can withstand high levels of pressure. That's why it's so expensive to buy a beer on the plane. You're paying for the technology. Perhaps you should call Molson or Labatt to inquire.

I've checked cans of beer in my luggage before without incident. As Steve said, the cargo hold is pressurized.

I brought back some beer from Mexico and I just put it in the dry cleaning bag, wrapped up in a hotel towel and taped it up just in case of some leakage but it made the trip just fine. AND I got a free towel, score!

Slightly open bottles leak from the pressure change. Bottles and cans don't explode.

If your concerns were justified, imagine the mess in the animal cargo hold after every flight ...

Ha, yup, no problems. I've done it lots. As I think someone else mentioned, I like to wrap them up in a plastic bag, or in a sock or whatever in case they leak. I do that to each one individually, and so far so good.

It was good beer too!

I too have brought beer cans on a plane with no incident...although i did put about 3 or 4 cans each inside a big ziploc bag just in case.

Apparently they must use the same beer at some of the night clubs in Calgary. That is the only explanation as to why they can justify charging $6 for a beer.

The saddledome should start buying their beer from wherever the airlines are getting it. Maybe they could charge a little less than $7.25

Nope.. customs people were impressed at how we did it, and that at least we knew what our limit was.

I had cardboard boxes that fit the cans quite well.. taped them up really well, then used some wire to make a handle that was then wrapped in a sock to make it easier to hold onto.

Another time I made the huge mistake of packing a can of aerosol hairspray in my luggage.

You guessed it, the plane blew up at about 20,000 feet.

Fortunately, the violent blast forced me away from the burning fusilage, and I had remembered to put on a parachute under my hoody.

Glided to the ground without incident.

I assume that if you can put on cans of beer, cans of soda would be okay too? On my next trip to Halifax I wanna dump my clothes there and bring back a suitcase full of Sussex Golden.

Bottles, cans, I've done it all. The only time beer doesn't come home with me is if I go the carry on only route. Never had one break yet, and I don't taken any precautions beyond putting it in the middle of my clothes.

I've had a lot of broken glasses before, but never beer bottles. They seem to be a lot more durable.

For what it's worth:

I live in Nunavut and the only way to get stuff here is on a plane. I know several people who package up beer and send through the mail. The mail gets here on a plane. People ship cans of beer all the time.
