This got a great review in the Herald today.

Apparently it is 2hrs 41m long too so it looks like Snyder may have kept a substantial portion of the story in tact.

I have a $25 gift certificate and may use it tonight.

It was panned on slate.com. I'm hoping it's good--I have to write a review for the Iowa City Press-Citizen for early next week.

If only those pissants could get me into an advance-screening!

So I have to have read the book to enjoy the film? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a movie?

I smell a big opening weekend and then flop.

Not necessarily, I would just recommend it. Its not a typical superhero movie. It's very dark, quite a bit more dark than The Dark Knight. And it just might be good to be familiar with the story already.

I wouldn't say that. But if you read the book first, you'll probably enjoy the book more. At least that's my experience with film adaptations.

I smell someone who probably wouldn't like or understand the novel anyways.

Big opening weekends are commonplace now. The Dark Knight dropped almost 50% during it's second weekend and continued to plummet after that, eventually slowing down after about 5 weekends of 30-40% drops, week over week. Of course, it started at like $150 M the first weekend, so it still did really well, but pulled almost 1/4 of it's total take in the first 3 days.

Now, Hellboy 2 would be a more appropriate example. It made 50% of it's total domestic take in the first weekend, then dropped precipitously after people realized it was crap.

The review in the Herald suggested the story was a little hard to follow if you don't know the comic.

To use a rather weird comparison it is kind of like Harry Potter (only it is the greatest comic ever, not a lame kids book). If you've read the book you'll get it, but having read the book some of the loose ends get tied up because you know that scene b was taken out and the movie goes straight from scene a to c in the movie.

Pshaw, I'm waiting for Calvin & Hobbes: Terror of the Snow Goons. I hear Dicaprio is playing Calvin and the same guys who did up Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder as a black dude are going to transform him into Hobbes.

Pfft. No way they can capture the nuances of the book on film. What about the snow-men subplot? Tyrannosaurus Rex in a fighter jet? Hobbes and Susie smooching?

Hollywood wrecks another classic. Sad.

I liked it.... seemed way more "badass" compared to other superhero movies in the past...even The Dark Knight.

Going to see this in a few hours, I got half way through the graphic novel yesterday to familiarize myself with the characters and was suitably impressed.

I saw it last night. It was really good but it would help to have read the comics before (which I had). There is a lot going on in that movie.

I saw it last night and was very impressed (A friend-of-a-friend was in line at 3 in the afternoon). I'd read the novel more than a decade ago and had forgotten a lot of the details, and there were things in the movie that I couldn't quite make sense of, but it was great nonetheless. Rorschach, in particular, was a fantastically-done character. For almost three hours long, it really flew by. I've got a lot of respect for Zach Snyder as a director.

Keon helped me with that.

Eau Claire was empty at the 10pm show.

Saw it last night, thought it was brutal. I didn't even know what to think, way to much going on if you havn't read the graphic novel. Also the soundtrack is the weirdest thing I have ever heard paired with a movie of that nature. Really weird when some random song starts playing out of nowhere, that didn't really match the scene, IMO.

I thought the soundtrack was awesome in my opinion. What didn't you get Rasta? My girlfriend saw it with hasn't read the Graphic Novel and followed it well enough. Sure some of the back story gets lost in translation, but I thought it was an excellent adaptation. I'm curious to see the directors cut. The Title sequence I thought was great, but then again I know all the rapid back story in context. Love the Kennedy part of the title sequence too. Not that I care but violence and gore was upped a bit from the book, which is fine I guess.
