I hope they never re-open. Can't stand Vickers and can't stand cowboys. The few times I've met him he's been a grade A ass and one of my buddies got slashed with a boxcutter by one of the bouncers.

I wouldn't care except that the place is associated with Calgary as if it is an example of what the city is about. It's like having a huge zit on your butt you want to hide, and your date is feeling around back there saying "ooh nice" and then BLAMMO - she encounters it, yodels in horror, and she's gone like a wino after a free booze truck.

Well, it's not really all that much like that, but that sure would suck.

It's not being capped. Only one tower is going up for now, but it's already above grade.

Last time I checked The Stampede and our western roots were a big part of the reputation of our city. What's wrong with a large club that focuses on country music. Seems like a good business plan. This club works in Calgary because of our western culture but would probably tank in Vancouver or Toronto.

Again, I don't get all the hate. Tons of clubs have come and gone but Cowboys has remained successful for 10+ years. They had to move twice because of getting kicked out of their buildings for development not because of lack of business or rowdy behaviour. If you don't like that kind of club there are plenty of other clubs in the city focused on other genres.

Personally, I am too old for the club scene and not a big country fan so it's not my kind of place. That being said, it's a great business model for a nightclub in this city IMO for the 20 something crowd.

Western Roots? The only time "Cowboys" plays country music is during stampede it is hardly a "country" bar. People in straw cowboy hats and diesel jeans do not make a country club.

Cowboys has far less to do with Western culture than it does with catering to people who want to be 'seen'.

If Calgary really gave a damn about Western culture, A Bar Named Sue would have never gone out of business.

That was a great place. Every time I was in there it was packed (though I don't think I ever went when there wasn't live music).

And as for Cowboys, yeah, it has as much to do with cowboyin' as the Ship does with sailorin'.

Right from day one of Cowboys relocating it was known that the land would be taken back by the city for the underpass.

I would be quite surprised if Vickers doesn't find another venue to relocate to. I agree with the idea that something along the CP tracks on either 10th or 9th avenue would be a good location for it.

Vickers was on the news last night saying he's going to try once again to move Cowboys to the old Office Depot location at 4th Ave/5th St downtown.

A Bar Named Sue was a great place but a poor business model. The venue was small and it could only fit maybe a 100 people. That's why it went out of business. The idea of 'alternative country' was a great idea but the venue and size was brutal. Too bad as I really enjoyed that place and also prefer over Cowboys.

I think you indirectly hit the nail on the head on why Cowboys has been successful. It's a 'place to be seen' which is a brilliant business plan for a nightclub and a great way to make tons of money. I am not sure how the most recent location has done but I recall the 9 Ave location was a place where NHL teams went after games, out of towners went out of their way to party at when in town and the college/university crowd were regulars. It's basically using the business model of Earls Restaurants in a nightclub setting.

So? That type of incident is few and far between. Many cities around the world have club/bar districts. Clubs in Calgary are so spaced out, it's difficult to walk from one to a handful of other clubs, which is the way it should be. You have to taxi it or drive just to get from one club to the other one alot of the time.

Inconveniencing an entire city just because of a few crime incidents is ass-backward thinking. Especially in a cold climate like Calgary's.

An entire city? Do you think even 5% of the population of Calgary frequent these places regularly? Seriously - I know they're busy but in a city of over a million people, let's not over-state things.
