So is this at all times of the day? Even in the evenings? That really sucks if it is. Guess I will be driving drunk more.

I love that they are doing this for an end of the line station only. How many people do you think are going to just drive to Shawnessy, Brentwood and Whitehorn instead? ESPECIALLY for things like hockey games?
Idiots.

The stations that don't have parking lots will see in increase in after hours parking once this goes into effect in all lots too I bet. I am pretty sure the restrictions in parking in residential areas around the University and Banff Trail stations are only in effect until 6PM.
As soon as you have more than one person in the vehicle it becomes cheaper to park at the dome. What is it there now? $12?
$5 / person + $3 to park AND you have to take the c-train. Weak.

Since rolling it out all at once is very difficult, they started at the end of each line and I support that move. I would rather have lots that have people driving in from out of town to take the trains be forced to pay before the ones that have a larger % of municipal tax payers parking.
As for the Flames game parking, it does make it more economical to park on the grounds. That will increase the demand for parking there, and will probably allow an increase to the rates as the lots start to burst at seams.

That isn't the case at McKnight/Westwinds. I would guess less than 1% of people there are from out of town since the station isn't easy to get to from anywhere besides that general area. Unless people from Airdrie pull off at Country Hills then try to use 36th down to 64th, but that is probably one of the worst roads in Calgary.

Yeah true, the numbers at Dalhousie are probably somewhat higher but nothing like at Sommerset/Bridlewood. Taking that into account, Anderson is a very better choice than either of the Northern stations. Either way,you need to start somewhere and why not start where people are taking the train 7-8 stops to downtown compared to the people who are taking it 2-3 stops.

What they should do, is when the system is in at all the lots, they should charge a different fee, based on use, at each of the lots. This is purely designed to make people take buses, so that the lots aren't so crazy.
I am a university student, and I drive to university. I've taken the train to school 1 time in my 6 years there. I will get a job, it'll be downtown. And then I'll move within walking distance of the train!

I haven't worked downtown for so many, many years and it is surely beyond a doubt a blessing. No LRT or riding the bus for me. I do my little drive and park for free at work. Too bad it's not an option for more people. Cities are so designed so poorly. The hub should be all about activites such as stadiums, parks, etc. Surrounded by spokes where people live and work. Not the mass movement from burbs to downtown and back again.
City governments should offer big tax incentives to every big firm that setups outside of downtown to help alleviate the problem for starters.

I will simply continue to park further and further into residential areas if they force me to. Even if I have to walk for half a kilometer to get to the station. At least it's free, there's space at times of my convienience (no waking up at 5:00AM for a spot), and I get plenty of exercise.

All revenue from this new parking charge will be used to increase the current level of cleaning, maintenance and security in these lots and on the entire transit system.

Huh. Anderson alone must have a thousand spots that fill up everyday. That one parking lot will be generating about 700 grand a year.
Thems better be some pretty spic n' span train stations.

Anderson Station (Paved Stalls) 1,323
Anderson Station (Gravel Stalls) 427 --
probably 1600+ that are full daily.

Wow. They have a total of 13000 parking spaces.
Conservative estimate, I bet 10000 spots are full 5 days a week. That's 30 grand a day when they get them all going.

I think the only station that has any empty spots at all on a daily basis is Anderson, and even then it is less than 200 spots.
I might be wrong though, I almost never need to park in NE/NW.
Anyone know of a station that has open spots at say 8am-9am?
Overall I think this is a good idea, because it is better to get this cash rather than up rates for everyone else who takes the bus. My only real beef if that it is being done before BRT is fully implemented to the SE, but thats due to my personal situation and where I live that makes busing a pain some days.

I don't think that is a fair arguement Joborule. In fact they have been free for ~25 years; now it's more than the cost of a fare. So the cost of taking the train to work will instantly go up by 60%.
I keep hearing on the news that it's to make sure parking is available; what they didn't say was if they did a survey to see how many of the vehicles have out of town plates on them. My guess is a significant percentage of the cars parked there are from out of town.
I'm not sure if I said this earlier in the thread, but they could have done this in 2 parts- $3 per day for parking, and city of Calgary taxpayers can by a yearly pass for $25. Then have parking authority patrol the lots and check for out of town plates using a person's pass. (To avoid people in Okotoks getting a buddy in Calgary to get a pass for them.)

Calgary Transit creates problems for home and business owners.
Then expect business owners to bear the cost of patroling thier own lots.
Quote:
South Fish Creek Recreation Centre says is costs them thousands of dollars a year already to patrol their parking lot.
They say the introduction of fees will only make situation worse.
