I would avoid the Palms unless you like being in the middle of nowhere.

If you're looking to party it doesn't matter where you stay, it doesn't take much time or effort to get to any of the best party places. While it is more convenient, you don't have to stay at Hard Rock to party at Hard Rock.

I wouldn't exactly say the Palms is "in the middle of nowhere" unless you considers 2 blocks off the strip the "middle of nowhere".
As far as party hotels - the Palms and Hardrock specifically cater to the 25 - 35 age group. I've stayed at about 7 different hotels in Vegas and I won't stay anywhere other than the Palms when I am there to party with the fellas. There's a reason that MTV has in the past selected the Palms for both the Real World and it's MTV Music Awards.
Google/YouTube Ditch Fridays and Rehab.

Those are two of the longest blocks in the world if it's only two blocks.

I definitely liked the Wynn more, but it's a much older crowd...

We just stayed at the Encore recently and it is absolutely mind blowing. All rooms are suites with power curtains and lights operated from the king sized bed, floor to ceiling windows with great views, seperate living room with furniture, massive bathroom with huge shower with multiple nozzles, TV in bathroom and bath robes. The decor is superb with textured wall coverings and tasteful artwork. The suite is the size of a small apartment.
It is a little further North on the strip than the Venetian but everything is a $10 cab ride away or a good healthy walk. The Venetian is definitely more central.
Oh and we paid only $1200 for two for three nights and four days including airfare. All in all an excellent deal.
The buffet is terrific at the Encore. Don't miss it.

It's too bad the Tam O Shanter is no longer around. Now there was a luxury hotel on the Strip!

The Venetian is amazing, never stayed at the Wynn. I'm going to Vegas on Thursday with the wife and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to go out for dinner. Any recommendations on a good place to go out for a few drinks with a 35-40 year old crowd would be good too.

The Wynn is a great hotel, as is the Venetian.
The Venetian is a little more central, but only by half a block or so.
The Venetian has a little more variety in terms of shopping and restaurants.
The Wynn is very high scale and we found there aren't really any places to grab a meal under $20 a person, even if you want something quick/lite. (the Ventian has some cafes that have reasonable rates)
The Wynn has an older crowd, as mentioned, and it has higher minimums at most of their tables, but I found their waitresses to give better service as long as you tip a buck a drink.
The drinks around the pool at the Wynn are $14+ so beware.

I've never stayed at either hotel...you high roller. Just make sure you:
-go to In-n-out, just across the freeway behind New York, New York
-Play the Sigma Derby electronic horse races at MGM Grand...the more middle of the night the better, that way you can really let the profanities fly while getting blotto for free.
-go to the Nascar Cafe in the Sahara and try to polish off a 6 pound burrito for 19.95...if you do it you get 2 free all day passes on their roller coaster (FML)
-go to Panda Express when you're right sloppy one night on the strip for Orange Chicken
-drink as many 3 foot frozen drinks as possible...but unless you want to poop blue (see CP confessional) do not drink the blue raspberry with Bacardi 151

Nope, first timer - got myself roped into the trip. I'm not all that excited for the trip to be honest, I don't understand the attraction of Vegas yet. In any case I wanted to make sure the hotel is good at least. Flight & hotel packages seem cheap - 4 nights at the Wynn and return flight for under $900.

Why would they encourage people to eat 6 lbs of grease and meat and then go on a ride that will most likely make then puke the before mentioned 6 lbs of grease and meat???

They're recycling the burrito filling for the next sap who wants to get a free roller coaster pass.

Chances are if a place has to offer free unlimited wine to get you in the door, it's not some place worth going.
When it comes to dining in Vegas, it's a good idea to say what price range you're looking for.
