Calgary becomes Vancouver for a day. Slush City.

Holy what a drive today. Worse than any regular blizzard. Ponds forming everywhere. There is going to be some major flooding in some parts.
Oh and in case you don't see me posting here anymore, the SAIT parkade collapsed on me. That thing is standing on its last legs.

Soooo many strugglers out there. Why do people lock on the brakes when they start hydroplaning? Just take your foot off the gas and dont steer.

Because they're too busy texting to realize what's going on.

Son of a....people drive slower in slush than they do in snow/ice.
To people going 20 in an 80 zone, please take your license, cut it in half and throw it in the trash.

What is the verdict on ABS and hydroplaning; last time I heard, you were supposed to lean on the brakes and let the computer do the work.

I wouldnt do anything to upset the momenteum of the vehicle. You could easily lose control by using the brakes at all. I dont really trust computers since they dont determine if you're hydroplaning or not.

EDIT: Sorry, I think I was assuming you actually want to stop. If you are just going through a puddle, then easing off is what I usually do.

saw two jackknifed buses, one of those big accordion ones and another regular one. Didn't think we were going to get out of Harvest Hills itself. Our driver appeared to never have driven in winter before. A lovely hour and 45 minute commute.

Hydroplanning isn't necessarily a slippery surface. On a slippery surface, ABS is fine if you want to slow down because you still have at least some traction. However, if you are hydroplanning, it means you are "floating" above the road and braking will be futile, if not making it worse by locking the wheels and thereby increasing the relative speed of the wheel to the road surface (which increases hydroplanning effect). The best to do in that situation is just let off the gas and hope that it stays in a straight line until you get traction back and then start braking.

I thought with RWD you let off the gas when hydroplaning, and with FWD you give it more gas. The idea being to make sure the front wheels are going as fast or faster than the rears.

I was curious if you were going to ride today or not. I heard a forecast of 10cm of snow today, and decided not to ride, then walking to the bus, I could barely stay up on my feet, can't imagine cycling.

			This was great snowball weather.
Hopefully everyone took advantage and found a transient nucks/oilers/leaffs/habs fan and threw one at them.

Wasn't too bad of a drive.
Guy in a 5-series BMW behind me though wiped out on a patch of ice going about 5 km/h!

My back alley is a disaster area. Thankfully, I was able to stick close to my garage and avoid sinking in the ginormous pile of slush that is everywhere. Momentum for the win!
The road down to work is abysmal. It looks like it was carpet-bombed with many tiny bomblets, and there's several large lakes forming now. Brutal.
