Crazy ex-gf wants to take my cat away!!!
What's up CP. Normally I wouldn't make such a...silly thread but really I am just seeking advice since this seems like a smart, educated community. So here goes...
Me and my ex broke up 8 months ago. We had 2 cats at the time, and we agreed that she would keep one of the cats, and I would keep the other. Nothing was signed, it was a verbal agreement. To make a long story short, last week she got a hold of me at work and asked if I could give her my cat back. Of course I said no, why the hell would I give away my kitty??
Then tonight I get home and she calls me and says that she wants my cat back still. Apparently, she called the vet I got her fixed at, and the vet told her that she was listed as the primary owner. I paid for the cat and everything, but she listed herself as the owner, at the time it didnt' matter. She is so intent on getting my cat back that she claims that since she is listed as the primary owner, that LEGALLY she can take it back at anytime. I asked her what is to prevent me from simply walking to the vet, which is right across my street, and changing it over to my name. Apparently she called 311 # and they told her that she would have to come with me to do it. And if she refuses to cooperate, then it becomes a matter for the courts. I looked at my vet documents, and unfortunately she is right. My name does not appear on the ownership documents, only her name.
Now this is just silly. To go to court over a cat??? Sounds silly, I know. But she is totally the type of girl who will waste both of our lives to do something as ######ed as this. Apparently 311 also told her that since is listed as the primary owner, that she can technically show up at my house with the cops and document in hand, and take it away.
Now the LAST thing I need is the cops showing up, in front of my neighbors, and me making a big scene if they take my cat away. I know she is doing this to smite me, and I can't go to the vet tomorrow to check it out since I have class tomorrow night, but I will wednesday to see waht my options are. This is such a stupid and ######ed situation, that I am pretty livid over her actions.
So....what can I do? What can she do? What can happen according to the law? I just want her to leave me the F alone, but I know her, and she will probably take it as far as she can. It's been 8 months and we both agreed I would keep the cat, yet now she pulls this crap. I love my cat more then I love myself and the LAST thing I need is for her to be taken away....

Leave the cat at a friends house for a few weeks...
Tell her it ran away looking for her.
Send her in a general easterly direction for her search.............

Tell her you had a verbal agreement and if she wants to back out of it she can take you to court. My guess is she's doing this as a scare tactic to get you to give up the cat.
The other option is give your cat to a friend and tell them to take care of it untill the heat is off. In the meantime tell the ex the cat got out and can't be found.

Have you asked her why she wants it back so bad? I have a psychotic friend who I could totally see doing something like this to spite her ex. Maybe if forced to come up with a good reason, she might just give up?

Get a dog, but it better be quick, I hear they'll be banned soon.
In all seriousness, I'm not sure what you can do. There's more to ownership than simply what's written on a registration form, but going to court over it would be pretty costly. If you have any receipts or records that indicate that you have been caring for the cat etc. they could be useful.

On a more helpful note, you can stop worrying about police showing up at your door. Unless she gets a court order, which is a ways down the line.
So lots of time to look up recipes.

Tell her you will give up the Cat after she gives you $800 dollars for boarding your Cat for the last eight months till she found a suitable home as per your verbal agreement.
If she can make stuff up, why can't you?

Did I read correctly that she's using the records of a vet office to determine ownership? Take the cat to a new vet for a check up and list yourself as the owner.
If you paid for the cat, track down some sort of record of that transaction.
Does your girlfriend have the money to burn on a lawyer? Is there really a lawyer out there who will sign on for a cat custody case?

You sir, (or madam), are absolutely correct. When we bought it, we got it for free from somebody. When I took her to the vet, the only reason she is listed as the owner is because she talked to the receptionist. That is the only way they have a record of her owning it. So I will take the cat to a new vet and do the same thing.
Thank you all. Yes, I even considered eating it.

Go to the new vet and then if it's not already get it licensed with the city.

Tell her to go ahead and call the cops - I'm sure they need a good laugh as much as anyone else.
You are worried, but really, what is she going to do? As Dion said, a verbal contract is just as binding as a written one, and if she wants to pay for a lawyer to try and sue the cat from you, she can go right ahead and waste her money. You having the cat for the last 8 months (and her having the other cat, which rather destroys any arguments she might have about not being able to take care of it until now) makes it pretty obvious who is telling the truth if it comes down to your word against hers.
As far as what she "learned" from 311, she's obviously a liar and a headcase, and I'd take her "findings" with a huge amount of skepticism.
I'd suggest you just don't take any calls from her or communicate with her in any way; she's obviously doing this to cause you distress, but if she doesn't get any payoff in being able to see or hear your pain, she is likely to get discouraged. Don't even listen to her voicemails - just delete, delete, delete and ignore. If she comes by, don't open the door. If she comes to your work, get her escorted out. It'll be hard but not as hard as letting her screw with your mind going forward.
