Default Smoking and Why employees get special privileges

Why is it that your fellow Employee is allowed 2+ Smoking breaks during the day?

I am coming from the aspect of a non-smoker working downtown and it really bugs me that people that are smokers in my building are taking 4 - 6 Smoke breaks a day. The thing that annoys me more is they seem to think that this is acceptable and that each smoke break is only 5 minutes in length.

I have been observing the comings and goings at work this week and calculated the man hours lost for each individual that smokes on our floor downtown. We are on the 20th Floor so there is an average 2 - 5 Minute wait time at the elevator. On average the Smokers of my floor are taking 5 Smoke breaks a day. Also on the average each smoke break takes 15 minutes in time, this bring the total wasted per day of 1hr 15minutes (and for some reason they still take an hour lunch break).

When you take this total and add it up for 1 individual Smoker, the results are quite unique. 1.25 hrs per day for 5 days is 6.25 hrs wasted smoking of the companies time. Add on the hour lunch break for the 1 day and they have almost effectively missed an entire day of work each week. To someone who does not smoke I find this to be incredibly unfair.

Why should someone who smokes only work a 4 day week when everyone else that gets approximately the same pay work a 5 day week?

I think that effectively all Smokers should only be allowed a smoke break Before work, at lunch (in the hour time frame), and after work. Allow one other Smoke Break during the day of about 15-20 Minutes.

End Rant !

My buddy and I used to take Fresh Air Breaks on our construction site, as we noticed the same thing.

The way I looked at it when I used to work at an office was that I had my own non-smoker breaks.

But why can't we just take an entire day off if we don't smoke and effectively work the same amount?

The awesome amount of carnage and death would be a wonder to behold if you went to one 20 minute smoke break a day.

At our office, we're mandated 60 minutes of non work time a day to use however we please.

But once again why should people that Smoke get special privileges and waste work time. Personally I hate how people get special treatment and it is not even noticed or cared about. Supervisors that smoke give special treatment to those that also smoke. This type of behavior is very, very biased and should not be rewarded.

Then again, I have used the fact that I'm a non-smoker to justify the amount fo work time I spend on CP.

Yeah, we'll all pay for it soon. This is more of a leadership style then the rules. Everyone under the law gets the same break, so start going out for a chewing break or something like that, they can't discriminate against you because you don't smoke.

Personally, I can go smoke or golf or do whatever I want as long as I'm hitting my quota and making the company money. Its the same with the non smokers.

i look at it like ken does. i do not personally feel screwed over as i have an easy job and spend a lot of my day online. but i do feel sorry for the people that do have to watch the smokers get extra breaks. it is very unfair. smoking is a choice. someone should be able to do it before/after hours and during their lunch break.

The beauty of this rant is your sitting at work on a message board complaining about people wasting company time. Awesome.

To the OP,

It's unfair, but I remember some research showing that on average, smokers ended up with more business contacts and moved in more social circles than non smokers. So if they ever managed to get fired from a job for too much smoking, they would have a larger pool of friends/acquaintances/smoking buddies to help them get back on their feet.

And if the company allows it, they are obviously bringing something back to the company that the company doesn't mind the one hour missed. You may as well also take advantage of it. Now go down and take a puff with your new friends.

Are they getting their work done?

If you are working in a coffee shop or something and have to run your ass off while they are outside smoking, that's one thing, but if you are in an office and these people are getting their work done, what's it to you?

Do you have to work harder and longer because they take smoke breaks?

probably because they have all those extra hours they spend socializing instead of woking!

I used to time my supervisor's smoke breaks, and then leave that much earlier at the end of the day. Pissed him off to no end.
