It is, but it is expensive.

I would definitely recommend the Cayman Islands if you're looking for a hot and beachy vacation. I've been there twice (my uncle used to live on Grand Cayman) and its beautiful. Very clean and safe, friendly locals, awesome beaches. Lots of good snorkling and diving if you're in to that too!

I was backpacking all over Costa Rica last August and would highly recommend it. The pacific side has many more resorts and development while the Caribbean side is more laid back and, to be honest, different from the rest of the country. I recommend the following areas:

1) Manuel Antonio - very touristy and busy BUT the beaches are incredible and there are tons of monkeys (in addition to the ape variety ) around.
2) Monteverde - It's way up in the mountains but the cloud forest is a must see in my opinion. Also, go on a canopy tour somewhere.
3) Cahuita - Super laid back Caribbean town on the SE of Costa Rica. The main street looks similar to the one someone posted of Montezuma. On one side of town is a black sand beach and the other sports a pristine white sand one (Playa Negra and Playa Blanca). There is also amazing snorkeling here. I would recommend not renting gear from the guy with leprosy though.

Another place that I didn't have time to get to myself but have heard good things about is Bocas del Toro in Panama. Check it out on google, it is a group of islands on the NE part of Panama (not too far from Cahuita).

I'm not a resort kind of guy, so I don't have any input in that regard.

Maybe Southern California for a little elective surgery would be the way to go!!!!!

On the other hand, Mexico is the best bargain it has ever been. If you are worried about drug activity and crime, stay on the Caribbean side, and out of Cancun.

Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean.

Goa, India. http://www.tourismofgoa.com/

Lake Como, Italy.

All places I'd like to go myself so you can be the guinea pig and let me know how it works out.

Go to Iceland Cheese!

Its the cheapest its ever been to visit, previous to this last year it was one of the most expensive places to visit in Europe.

Its not beaches and hot hot weather, but its an unforgettable experience.

You can do beach countries anytime, take the economic crisis in Iceland as a real opportunity to visit a kick ass country.

Stick with Hawaii Cheese, alway's a great vacation there. Try the Big Island for something different assuming you have never been.

We were there within the last year, was not a problem. Mind you, we had rented a condo in a complex that was all private, so all the merchants etc trying to sell you something were not allowed on the grounds.

Cabo is just awful for people trying to sell you stuff. And it is very Americanized. I don't know if I would go back, maybe only because very easy direct flights from Calgary.

But taxes etc are all higher than on the Yucatan side too.

And I know you have a youngster. Most of the waters there are very dangerous. We were on one of the only safe beaches, Meridia or something. But waters are not as warm as on Yucatan side or as nice for kiddies either.

Please please please stay like this until June...

As for ideas, it sounds like you've done Central America to death. But if you're still down with the Americas, Peru might be a nice idea. I've always wanted to climb Machu Picchu.

Also, my girlfriend did a two week tour of the Greek islands last summer with her sister and to this day she won't shut up about it. Sounds like a great idea, I guess they even saw a black sand beach there. Tons of culture and old beach towns, as well as ancient Greek artifacts too.

Heavens, I have seen a pic of your little guy. How old is he now? 2ish? He is plenty old for sand and ocean, little kids thrive in that environment. Don't baby him.

All I was saying is, a lot of the water at Cabo has undercurrents and you have to be careful. The beaches however are well marked, and some areas are roped off where it is safe for kiddies etc.

And when I thought about it again, the name of the safe beach where we were at was Medano. It is on the Sea of Cortez side, not on the Pacific Ocean where the waters are wild.

Singapore was the best holiday I've ever taken. Clean, safe and very efficient transportation. Lots to do and fabulous weather. Beautiful hikes and activities galore with a blend of cultures(great food). I'd go again for sure!!!!!!!!
