Fine. I don't think bears are innocent, that's why. I think they are predatory and innately evil.
Look, you wouldn't think twice about exterminating termites to protect a 2x4 in your house, nor would 99.999999999% of Christians. I'm simply applying that same logic to bears, except I'm not trying to protect dead wood, I'm trying to protect my loved ones from a horrible death at the hands (well paws, lol) of a bear. I don't understand why this is such a stretch for you guys.

That's what I feel as well. I am the sort of person who when in a Chinese restaurant, feels bad for the non-chinese people who try ordering off the menu and get something terrible (I always think that thing needs pictures), not to mention that most Chinese food needs to be eaten in large groups for variety. I've seen many couples order one $15 plate and it's a pile of steaming vegetables. Ouch!
In the same way, I feel a bit of a cringe and embarassement when my relatives or other tourists come and ask to see the Stampede and I wonder if they do indeed think: "we came all the way for this?". The Stampede is fine, Stampede spirit is cool. Wearing jeans to work and Stampede breakfasts are tres cool...I just don't like all the false hype and sort of false advertising I think the Stampede does to sell itself as bigger than it is. It is what it is. A small western themed festival with carnival rides, rodeos, and small outdoor performances in an aging park (they really need to redevelop that whole area into something modern, like an entertainment neighbourhood for year-round activities).

Calgary is not a world class city despite that being the city's goal. I also have to explain to people it's proximity to Vancouver, because people only know the big 3 Canadian cities.
And the Stampede is nice and no dog and pony show but let's not kid ourselves, it's not a world reknown festival. Carnival in Rio, Lovefest/Parade in Germany, Oktoberfest, Reading and Glastonbury. those are huge festivals.

1) Are bears not created by God?
2) Would you support extinction of all species that fit this description?
3) Would that logic also apply to humans you consider predatory and evil?

I consider myself a Christian, and I would defend my property as you described. Wiping out an entire species isn't exactly the same thing.

The zealously religious are often confused at the simple minded. It's just a burden you will have to bear.

I didn't mean to suggest anything about your piety, you stated you stopped discussing massacring bears when it was apparent logic would not prevail. I am attempting to follow your logic.

Yeah, but no one is a "perfect Christian". You must be really sad they're shutting down Gitmo? During the cup run in 2004 when everyone had a car flag were you like my then hairdresser that told me it would be great if instead of a Flames flag we could all have Christian flags?

yes and so are termites and most people have no problem whatsoever killing them. it is hypocritical to say a bear is more important than a termite just because it is bigger. I kill mosquitoes, too and they were also created by God.
2) Would you support extinction of all species that fit this description?
right now I'm only worried about the ones that affect me and my family. others can worry about animals that affect them.
3) Would that logic also apply to humans you consider predatory and evil?
yes. as I said, I supported (and continue to support) Bush's pre-emptive attack on Iraq because humans that are predatory and evil must be eliminated.

Answers above and I hope you're satisfied now. I'm starting to feel like a real jerk for yet again derailing this thread after I said I wouldn't.

I thought all human life was sacred? To God sin is sin. As a race humanity quantifies it (which is probably a good thing). While I at times have a hard time understanding this the fact remains. So really dogmatically, you lying to your parents, stealing a candy bar etc, to God is as "predatory and evil" as any other sin.

You should see the pictures! I tried to salvage it by turning it into space-ranger suit or something. I put on those 3D cardboard glasses, made a belt and "space" armor out of construction paper and masking tape, and carried a Nintendo zapper around the house...but kept the cowboy boots.

Basicly, based on my understanding from my Confirmation days was that God all Sin is Sin. So stealing a Candy bar to God, is like Murder. It's all the same. Hence why he can forgive your sins no matter what. So I was responding to your devout, Christian self that your being hypocritical by saying we need to kill evil people when really, to God, humanity is all the same level as equal. That apparently was lost on you.

It's better for the locals than it is for the tourists. If you come in from out of town, it's basically a regular city with a second-rate amusement park in the middle of it, and a rodeo. But for the people who live here, it's a week of slacking off at work, heavy drinking, pancake breakfasts, so it's good.
Oh yeah, and all this "attracts a million visitors", it's like Stampede Propaganda and we've heard it repeated so many times some people seem to believe it. If the turnstiles turn a million times at the park, it doesn't mean a million people came to Calgary. The vast majority of the people that go to the Stampede live in Calgary, and a lot of them go more than once.
|
I agree with you that it doesn't being a million people to Calgary, but during Stampede you cannot find a hotel room in Calgary.

It depends on the denomination or even individual theolgical intepretation on the so-called weighting of sins. Certainly if you read the bible literally, it's pretty difficult to come away with a egalitarian answer like "sin is a sin" when there are specifically verses which talk about "6 things that God hates the most" and "the unforgivable sin", etc.
Your Confirmation Days? Mormon? I think that in Dess' world, your stand would have to be outside of the Stampede grounds as well. And Bear infested.
