This thread went from interesting discussion to comedic gold, whether DESS is being serious or this is a massive level I have yet to determine, but either way it entertains.

Is DESS the one that started the Exterminate All Bears thread as well? Wow. I wonder what goes on in his head sometimes. Nevertheless, it's part of the wonderful jollies we get at CP.

DESS is entitled to his/her beliefs. I am not religious in the least, but I think everyone needs to calm down a little. If you don't like what DESS is saying don't respond to it. It's just words on a computer screen, believe what you want to believe.

No one is suggesting he can't believe what he wants to believe. No one.

These are moronic comments that the poster deserves to be called on.

DESS saying "God says you're wrong if you disagree with me" is the closest thing to intolerance in this thread.

It's not that we don't like what DESS is saying. I think we all love it. It's massively entertaining, thought provoking to realize what certain people think... and really different from the status quo here.

sorry I was just about to leave the office (damn life and work)....but the problem I have is religious peoples having to mention GOD every turn....does he high five his plastic Jesus after a great crap.....so things have nothing to do with religion......leave it alone......if he did not like it he could keep it to himself.......

From an outside point of view, I don't think that Calgary is an international city. When you talk about Canada, people picture Toronto or Montreal. I guess you can say Vancouver is borderline int. city. But that's it, I think the average Joe Global would be hard pressed to come up with a few things about Calgary.
As far as Stampede goes, I have never read about it or seen it on TV neither in Europe nor in Australia. Never met anyone who would even mention it. If it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't know it existed, so IMO it doesn't really help your case.

And if DESS can't get his pancake breakfast onto the grounds in 2009, it would probably be alright to let them sponsor some off-site event.

I have no problem about mentioning religion, but I have never, even as a kid in Sunday School ever felt comfortable about foisting it upon others which is exactly what DESS is saying. He's saying let's force the Stampede to take on a specifically Christian bent, exclude all others (to the sidelines or off-site as he says), and then make everybody conform to reflect who a small proportion of us are.

That was me and I'm shocked to see that thing is still alive. It went completely sideways about 30 seconds after I posted it. I had no idea what the Colbert reference was all about and I truly did think my idea was original and bright. I bowed out of that one as well as soon as I could tell logic was not going to prevail.
Sooooooo, to get back on topic. I think the Olympics bought us at least 25 years of international recognition. Time's probably ticking on that, but to this day anybody who is over 30 with any interest outside of their own community should know at least a little bit about Calgary, if only that we hosted the Olympics a relatively short time ago.

Please explain your logic, it leaves me a big confused. Since you hace shown yourself to be so emphatically Christian in this thread, what do you think about protecting God's creation? How can you so blatently advocate the shedding of innocent blood and the cruelty to animals that is prohibited by a lot of different old testament material?

Maybe you should be mad at your mom and stop blaming the Stampede for all your problems.
I don't like the Stampede either and I gotta wonder what tourists who come here for it think of it all. My guess is that more than a few of them every year find themselves in the middle of Stampede Park and they say "we came all the way here for this? We coulda gone anywhere!"
It's better for the locals than it is for the tourists. If you come in from out of town, it's basically a regular city with a second-rate amusement park in the middle of it, and a rodeo. But for the people who live here, it's a week of slacking off at work, heavy drinking, pancake breakfasts, so it's good.
Oh yeah, and all this "attracts a million visitors", it's like Stampede Propaganda and we've heard it repeated so many times some people seem to believe it. If the turnstiles turn a million times at the park, it doesn't mean a million people came to Calgary. The vast majority of the people that go to the Stampede live in Calgary, and a lot of them go more than once.

I would be happy to discuss this in another thread or in a PM, but honestly let's leave it out of this one. I already apologized to the OP for my part in the derailment of his thread, which was an interesting topic without all this other stuff.

You've already called the thread (/thread) and I think the topic has run its course. Why not enlighten us all with your bear massacring logic?
