LOL I find out tonight. Had no time to work on it lately and then discovered how incredibly dumb I am. Never bothered to check out what kind of card I had in my new computer. Just was happy it was running. It has a pci-e card. So tonight I will know if the video card is the problem. I'll be surprised if it's something else though the power supply is a strong possibility.

There's no reason why a faulty PSU would be giving you the infinite loop error, unless somehow it was affecting the power to your videocard or something was damaged and unstable. A bad PSU usually just means a system that will crash or turn itself off every now and then.

I've seen a bad PS do some strange things, but generally I would agree.

But more to the point, once you have just about eliminated all the probable causes, you need to start working through the improbable ones.

At this point, if it isn't the video card, I would say it is the motherboard; but it is a heck of a lot easier to replace a PS than a mobo so it is worth a quick check if nothing else works, especially if you have a spare one handy.

Finally!!!!!!!!!! I took the one out of my working computer and because it's so big I couldn't get it into the non-workign one so I just reversed gears. The card from the non-working one gave the same goobledy- screen on the working one. I think that should be confirmation that it's the card? Which leads me to ask what to replace it with. I'd like to upgrade it to a better card so it can still have the Media Center TV capability but also work better for gaming. Any suggestions?

Well if the card is just a straight graphics accelerator, and doesn't have the coaxial input that some all in 1 cards have, any of the mid-range cards like this one, or this one, will do depending on wattage of your power supply, and what the previous card was.

Are the cooling fins of the card caked with dust? Heat related problems due to insufficiently cooled graphics cards also show up, and some of the single slot cards really should have dual slot cooling.

I have an extra fan. Should I hook it up? My power supply on that computer is 300 watts. So I'm going to upgrade both.

No, I'm pretty sure the old card sounds borked. If this was the card that originally came with the system, it's a low-end part that doesn't generate much heat or require much power.

According to HP, your computer already has all the video-in options, is that directly connected to that card?

No the video in isn't connected to the card. So Cliche's advice looks very solid. I'm off to buy them today.

Took Cliche's advice and purchased the Geforce 9600 GT even though I had problems with Nvidia because hey the price was good. It needed a better power supply so went with that as well. It's back together(man there are a lot of wires to fiddle with when changing a power supply and it would be handy to have smaller hands) and working well. Got some things happening at startup that I have to fix(some of programs I was using to diagnose, fix are starting up automatically) by I think deleting some programs. But other than that thankfully it's over.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in with advice. Literally without CP I don't manage to fix it.
