possibe, most likely just congestion on shaws network, during the evening hours you'll rarely get the rated speed.

I've been testing it for a few days, at off peak times. Maybe Mackenzie Town is not yet upgraded, finally got an email today which said the changes will go live this month.

I am in Mackenzie Towne as well, it is upgraded. My wife works for Shaw and told me that it had happened (although Hemi-Cuda spoiled her suprise), which I assume would not have happened if we hadn't been affected.

Too many people in Mackenzie Towne, heck from my place I can see 14 wireless connections...I was also having bum speed tests, but I just got this one on Regular, so the anomolies must be just be congestion. If they continue perhaps you have issues local to your street ped or house in terms of noise/signal etc.

Hardwire in and see if it dramatically improves. If it does, maybe try power cycling your router.

So internet and TV was down at my house for about an hour yesterday afternoon. After it came back up, my speeds have increased. Hurray for upgrades!

But I forgot usually it needs reseting... so just unplug the power cable for 10 seconds or so and plug it back in. Voila, has the new config file and 15mbit. No need to call them to provision it.

Wow... my internet here has been BRUTAL.

Before reading week, hit 6' o clock and my speeds were... wait for it...

Download: 400 kp/s
Upload 300:kp/s

So I call shaw and the guy tells me to unplug my modem for 5 minutes then call back in an hour after I told him I just did that before calling.

So anyways, I do that... call back, explain it... the guy tells me to do the exact same thing!! So I do that, talk to him while I wait 5 minutes. Still no speed improve. He upgrades me to extreme for a month to see if anything happens. Tells me there is nothing else that can be done and if that does not work I should cancel my services.

Well I'm at home at 11:35 AM, on extreme

Download: 5000 kp/s
Upload: 900 kp/s

So how is it that your guys' regular internet is 3x faster than mine?

Tech also came, put a filter on my modem and said there is nothing else he can do.

I don't want to go to Telus!!!

Is your NIC rate at least 10/100?

If so, it may be a faulty Cat-5 cable, they do crap out sometimes.

What kind of a filter do you need for a cable modem?

So, those are my results. But, when downloading from Giganews, I still get the same old 1.2MB/s that I always have after the initial speed burst.

Have the only upgraded the speed burst, but not the sustained transfer rate?

If so, that is pretty cheap ... they'll advertise these great speeds but neglect to tell people you only get them for 20 seconds or so.

No it applies across the board.

Your download will always be capped at the max a server can load to you. Try going on your favorite private torrent tracker and loading up, you should see overall speeds around 2.5-3 MB/s if it's a good tracker.

Or try a usenet download.

Or download something from www.nzone.com . They have no download cap from what I can tell.

Giganews is a usenet download. http://www.giganews.com/

Love the service, especially the 240 day retention and searching ability, and I was pretty sure it wasnt capped. I'll add more connections and see what happens.

EDIT:
Tried adding more connections, and still get the same thing. The rate jumps to about 2.3MB/s for about 20 seconds, then drops back to the old 1.2MB/s. I read the FAQ that giganews has, and they dont cap connection speed.

I then tried Nzone, and also stagnated at 1.2MB/s.

So, it is either shaw, or perhaps my RAID drives not keep up... I dont think it could be anything else.
