Sunglasses question for the Optometrists out there and talented amateurs
Alright, here is the deal:
I wear shades often...I wear sunglasses regularly....actually, more than regularly, habitually and to some degree almost religiously. I even keep a spare pair in my glovebox in case I forget my main pair which never happens.
Long story short: I am always wearing sunglasses and have been for years.
So, about 10 minutes ago I took a short walk outside my office to throw something into the mail, sans shades, and my vision is just starting to clear and the pounding in my skull beginning to subside.
And I mean a short walk, I was outside for all of maybe 40 seconds.
Whats the deal here? I feel like Dan Ackroyd in the Blues Brothers 2000 where the cop asks him to take his shades off....
Am I totally incapable of handling sunlight now? Optometrists out there, help me out....for free.

You've probably got a bit of an intolerance to the sun now. Not unlike people kept in solitary confinement. I'd just wear them less often so you get some resistance to the brightness. I only wear mine when theres a lot of glare.

I find this problem varies from day to day with me. I always wear sunglasses as well... and some days I can not wear them and see fine in bright daylight... the others I swear I go blind. So far the biggest factor I've seen would be how much sleep I got the night before. If I'm tired I generally can't handle the light.
I don't think wearing sunglasses permanently affects your pupils ability to constrict or adjust for light.

I have this same issue, I wear sunglasses when I am outside, no matter how sunny it is (I don't wear my sunglasses at night though).
I seem to be overly sensitive to light and wonder if there is something wrong with me. I am not on any medication!

In all honesty, it is likely you are just one of the unlucky unpigmented retina folks that suffer from photosensitivity.

What are you suggesting? I can assure you, my 'medications' do no such thing.
So what do us photosensitive folks do about this?

My wife is an Optometrist and I asked her. She said that tinted lenses are addictive for everyone and that the pupils are used to having less light so therefore they open up trying to allow more light into your eyes to see better. The reason why you're blinded after short exposure to the sun is that your pupils are conditioned to the sunglasses now. She said to try 'weening' off wearing sunglasses all the time or trying a brown tint lense instead. This may take quite some time and it may not improve things.
Good luck!

Thats helpful....I was hoping for something more along the lines of a quick fix without me having to do anything.....you know, meditate for 10 minutes and your eyes will be good as new....holistic BS like that.
But theres no crazy damage that can come from this right? Thats what I was most concerned about.

You're damaged enough... There's no way you could take more on.
I'm no doctor tho. I'm one of those "tallented amateurs".

The sun has been rather bright the last few days. I had some serious snow blindness two days ago from a short walk.

A Week of not wearing Sunglasses and you will no longer have the same issue.

Really. This seemed like a perfect opportunity to have a little fun with our little Locke.
Something along the lines of making sure to wear a tinfoil hat with eyeholes cut in it or something.
But no. The "optometrists" have to go and be all "professional" and give "medical advice." Thanks for nothing.
What a waste.
