Lifetime In Suspension

Hell yeah. This can only lead to cheaper Tijuana hookers, and a better deal on Yucatan Peninsula blow.
In non jokersterness, since when is ANYTHING said by Newt Gingrich worth paying attention to? Dude, it's Mexico. Nothing in this story is new, nothing is out of the ordinary. They'll continue their cycle of violence, corruption and clean up as always.
Not trying to be an ass, just saying. Yeah, Mexico bites it to live in. Whatever.

Mexico has more regionalism than either Canada or the U.S. Certain states in Mexico might as well be different countries.
I went to Oaxaca a few years ago and it felt like a 3rd world junta. We even had our bus boarded by armed soldiers and had to show our passports. The driver appeared to pay some kind of bribe to them as well. But then you go to a place like Cancun, and you might as well be in Miami or something.

Wouldn't a civil war be the people versus the government? This appears to be the government versus the drug traffickers with the people caught in the middle.
I've been down to Puerto Vallarta and it was quite nice, with no signs of violence or anything (that I saw), but I've heard that the northern part of Mexico near the U.S. can be very very rough, and that's where most of the trouble is. I heard there's like 4000 murders a year in that area.

A civil war is factional or sectarian violence/conflict within a single national entity. Probably has to explode into open war to fully qualify as a civil war, I guess Mexico is close to that point.

Is it wrong that my first thought was "How is this going to affect my trip to Mexico this spring?"

It probably won't if you stay in the tourist areas.
Many parts of Mexico have been in a pseudo state of war for several years, yet most people don't notice. It's like Russia... most people in Moscow probably don't notice they have a war going on in their own borders.

No. Why else should you care about Mexico?
The first things that popped into my mind was how this might cause the prices at Taco Bell to spiral out of control and what affect it might have on Manny Fernandez's chances at playing in the Olympics.
