To those who have asked how my son got my music onto my iPhone, this is what I know. He downloaded music onto his Mac computer and hooked my iPhone up to his Mac to move them over. I don't know where he gets the music (not sure I want to know) but I know it doesn't cost anything. I can find out more if others want, but he works nights so is on a way different schedule than I am, plus he doesn't live with me.

I may be missing something here or may have been misunderstood but what he does isn't all that complex.

then the music should still be on that computer and in the itunes library so all you should have to do is reconnect the phone and re-sync it.

The computer that has the music is not the one I use to sync to iTunes. I thought my syncs to iTunes would backup my music there but I can't find it. If someone could tell me where to look in iTunes, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Sure would solve my problem.

^^It's not a two way sync for music. Get a music library of your own to use the device as intended.

We haven't had an iPhone tip in awhile:

For those who like to play games but want to listen to there own music or podcasts, start up a playlist or podcast, go back to the home screen and launch the game. Your music or podcast will fade out and the games music will start. Once the game is loaded click the headphone remote once and your music or podcast will start to play without quitting the game.

I agree ... but I was able to find a fix if you're interested:

http://cnettv.cnet.com/2001-1_53-50004835.html

It's dead easy, you just need to copy 2 little files from your home computer to your work computer and you can manage the content on your iphone at both computers. The above link is a how-to video.

Quick update from another thread. As Calgary Transit has teamed up with Google Maps we can now get full transit trip planning all from the Maps application. I just gave it a whirl and it seemed to work really well. You have to go to list view to see the bus #'s, but that's good enough for me.

This is pretty cool, you can click the time icon to change your departure times and all that. Too bad I rarely take transit now.

Looked through the thread and didn't see this question specifically....

What are peoples thoughts on the 8Gig vs 16G? Of course more is always better, but so is saving $100 if I don't really need it.

I won't be doing movies, just some music and some apps--I don't know how much memory the apps generally take up.

Are there more people that got 8 and wish they had 16, or got 16 and don't really need it?

Any more info on the average persons data usage would be cool too. I think I am going to try 500mb at first, and if that isn't enough then go up to the 2 gig plan.

I have the 16GB, and have 14.68 capacity according to iTunes, and have 5.38 free. Glad I bought the 16GB, because you never know what is going to happen in the future. I remember my family buying a PC many years ago, and it had 6GB of storage, and we were told that we would never fill that thing up. Look what happened. If you can afford the 16GB unit, buy that.

As for data. I got into the 6GB a month plan for 30 dollars, and in over 6 months of owning this thing, I have probably still yet to hit 6GB total. I reset the stats every month just so I can monitor my usage, but I don't come close. I might use 300mb a month. If I could, I would switch right now to a lower level (in fact, I should look into whether or not I can do just that).

If you aren't going to be using the 3G very much, and can use WiFi at home, 500mb should be plenty.

I have 16GB. I don't have too much music or video on it, so it is more than enough for me. Apps don't take too much space. To give you an idea, I have more than 50 apps and it only takes up 314 MB. What will take up space is any videos, pictures and music you have on there. I figure that through the life that I own it, I will fill it up as some point. I would generally recommend more space if you can afford it, but you can survive on 8GB.

As for the data usage, on an active month I only use a couple hundred MB. I have the 6 GB plan and will likely never get close. I think about the only way you would get close is if you tether it to your computer and use it as your internet connection on your computer. You should be fine with 500MB. I am not absolutely certain, but I believe that Rogers will let you downgrade your plan if you find you are not using it as much. You may even be able to use a lesser plan than 500MB.

I have the 8. I have smart playlists set set up to sync only my 5 star songs, so that's about 3 gigs. I have it set up to sync only new podcasts and tv shows. I sync every night before bed after refreshing the podcast list and moving over any torrents that have finished downloading. If I am watching an entire season of a show I will select all, mark as not new then select 5 or six episodes and mark them as new. When those get watched, I will do the next 5 or 6.

I have never hit the limit.

Yeah, through playlist management, you can easily get by with an 8GB. Even if that isn't enough for all your music, you can download an app that lets you stream music from your home computer to your iPhone.

As for data usage, I had the 6GB/month plan and only got to 1GB in a month and that was streaming radio a lot at work. I called Rogers to change my plan, and bless their hearts, they graciously waived a $100 plan cancellation fee for me. I hope they don't go bankrupt because of their generosity.

I am (hopefully) going to be getting an iPhone this week when my contract with Bell is done... I was curious to see if anyone had any opinions on which company (even though they are essentialy the same) has the better deals/service?

I was leaning towards fido as their evenings start much earlier, and you get unlimited texts....although you get less of a data plan..hmmmmmm

I think it depends on what you plan on using it for. Rogers of course like you mentioned offers bigger data plans. Fido offers better things for the type of person that is actually going to use their phone for its sole purpose. Fido has per second billing which is pretty nice. Rogers has "unlimited" text as well, its 2500 text's which I find almost impossible to get to. I am with Rogers and have the special offer student MY10 and it works out pretty good.

If you really want to get technical you should make a list and list all the essentials you need and match them up with the company. Both are pretty similar though.

is that 2500 texts incoming/outgoing/both? and thats included in on the base iphone plans, correct? I see that you can add an additional 2500 texts through one of the "extras"..

I believe incoming are free (someone can correct me if im wrong) I am not sure its included, I am pretty sure it is an extra. I have MY10 which is free texting to anyone of those 10 people. I only text probably 5 people regularly so I didnt bother to get the 2500 texts. If you are a student you should check with rogers they might still have the MY10 which is early evenings and free calling/texting to any of those numbers.

Rogers has a few options for the iPhone:
$60 a month (not including system access fee and all the other crap they charge you with) gives you:
MY5 Local, 1GB data, 9PM unlimited evenings and weekends, and 250 regular minutes.

$75 a month gives you:
MY5 National, 2GB data, 9PM unlimited evenings and weekends, and 400 regular minutes

Or you can just pick a custom voice plan and add a data plan:
$25 - 500MB
$30 - 1GB
$60 - 3GB

Its pretty hard to go over 1GB in 1 month.

Fido has similar:
$60 - 250 mins, 7PM unlimited evenings and weekends, unlimited text, 500MB of data
or
$75 - 500 mins, 7PM unlimited evenings and weekends, unlimited text, 1GB of data.

again, Fido has per second billing which is pretty nice.

Edit: BTW Fido has this new "no system access fee" which is pretty nice as well.
