Does having the old modem matter? I've still got the old Cybersurfer.

Actually would having this ancient modem affect me in any negative way?

Good old Shaw. My 'Extreme' in Banff doesn't have much on the DL.

First try reseting the modem by unpluging it for 5 min and see if that does the trick for you

I think so. I did a temporary suspension of my Shaw account (lets me keep my email addresses while I move over to Telus.) However they somehow forgot to switch my modem off. I'm not using it, but I would think that they also wouldn't be sending upgrades to it either.

I'm getting about those same speeds just now when I connected to it again for a speed test. So I would say that you guys didn't get upgraded.

The new speed upgrade will not apply to the older network. In theory though I believe those modems are provisioned at 8Mbit downstream and 256k upstream.

If you are on a particular node with no (or very few) other cybersurfer users you could have probably acheived those speeds.

Anyways with the new speed upgrade on the DOCSIS technology (SB510x modems), you should probably switch over, and I think Shaw will let you do that for free.

DISCLAIMER: I do not work for Shaw.

on DSL reports, people say Calgary is a mess and much of the city isn't upgraded yet so don't worry about it. They don't even have much of the city switched over to DOCSIS 3. Shaw is scrambling to do too much at once and it's not going to happen for alot of people. It'll take another month maybe...

I would have liked to keep the old Cybersurfr but it just stopped working one day. With that thing in the early days where there were almost no other cable customers, I used to pull 1.8 megabytes (not bits) per second. That's about 14-15000 kbps so what extreme customers are now getting except it was something like $19.99 a month then instead of the $40-$50 it is now.

I just called into Shaw an hour ago, and they "repushed" my modem and I have the new speeds.

If you're not experiencing them, just give them a call.

is what I'm getting (after unplugging and plugging my cable modem back in) and I'm on just regular high speed.

Does that look right?

So how long until rural providers like Platinum are going to increase their speeds for people on wireless internet?

This is what I'm getting as well. Not noticing any speed increases.

Yeah back when they first rolled out DOCSIS I had a Cypersurfr, and I was getting those kinds of speeds too, it was awesome. Then I moved and in the new area I was getting maybe 2Mbit lol.. so I had to get a new modem.
