So for any of you who want to blame religion so what if I told you months ago a group of nutcases went to a church in southeast asia and slaughtered a good dozen people who were just going to church thats all. Only reason was because they didn't want any religions entering their country. WHat do you blame that on? Instability is in all fabrics of society you can't tie it all onto religion as being the source. In this case though, this guy was a heavy believer in a religion, combine that with his instable attitude, and he goes way off the map and ignored everything the Bible stands for.
Someone who has no belief in a religious system posts this thread with the intent to stir pots.

A child has lost his life because his father is a religious wackjob and all you people can do is come up with punchlines? Have you no humanity left in your callous souls? No decency?
Think of this child's mother....his sister, his brother, his third cousin twice removed!! Actually, speaking of which, where the hell was his mother?
This is just further proof that religion is destroying the moral fabric of our society. Kill the God-mongers!
This man should be slowly tortured using every known and available means in order to set an example to other would-be child beheaders that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated in our society!
Knowing our justice system they'll give him a slap on the wrists, $500 bail and ask him nicely not to behead his other son....sleep with one eye open and a steel collar around your neck kid.

It's not about religion if this guy was mentally ill. Even people who are raised without religion become mentally ill and do things like this. If it wasn't to give his child salvation, it would have been to save him from extra-terrestrials or some other crazy situation.

That was a clever and amazingly appropriate picture, I have to admit, I didnt think of it until I saw it.

I agree, his religion had little to do with it, schizophrenia is one nasty illness and whatever your beliefs are might only determine how you validate your craziness.

Just an aside really but your friend "lives with schizophrenia", he is not a schizophrenic. As someone that works in the mental health field it kind of bugs me that people are labelled such as this. This isn't a personal shot at you, even people in the mental health field still do this so you are not alone lol.
Also there are many effective medicines that help people live with schizophrenia these days but they only work if you take them as prescribed and this dude may not have been doing that.

Except that there seems to be some corelation between Schizophrenia and religion. I read somewhere that like 96% of Schizophrenics are of the term "very religious" and either hear demons or think demons from hell are possessing them, what do they do? they keep reading the bible over and over in hoping to drive out to demons. Hard to drive anything out if you keep reading fantasy.
Maybe they should put the "good" book away and read Darwin.

Instead of darwin, what if he was obsessed with Harry Potter books, then at least he could look all wizardry and people could identify the adult male as unstable.

Which is what exactly? Positing that the Bible "says" specifically one thing or another is just as bad as this guy who claims that he was operating according to "God's will". The problem is not in determining what the Bible says; it is in making the choice to do whatever one thinks it says. I agree that the problem here is not religion, but the situation is a gross caricature of what conservative Christianity has become: deciding what is or what is not "God's will" is something of an obsession among many evangelicals.

We should not be surprised about this, nor should we expect it to change. I would expect that it is rather difficult to convince a person suffering from schizophrenia that the demons/angels/fairies/gods/messiahs he sees and communicates with are only in his head. The "visions" validate themselves and a commitment to a belief in the supernatural.

I don't see why an Atheist would behead someone to protect their "salvation" do you? Especially since salvation is a religious concept.

Well if you know the Bible you have the admit that there isn't a clear distinction between the concept of "murder" and sacrificing one's child to god. God asks several people in the Bible to sacrifice their children for him.
It isn't consistent with itself, hard to understand something that has so many exceptions.

Really, there have a couple examples of BLATANT sarcasm in this forum in the past 2 days, and both times (that I've seen) people have not picked up on it.
Geez, are we so reliant on the green text that we can't recognize even the most obvious examples, even after it is pointed out? Or are people just spoiling for a good internet bruhaha?

Tell that to the thousands of muslims murdered by Christians in the past 1000 years and vice versa.
Its clear that neither Christians nor Muslims have thought much of each other. Any "respect" either group has for each other in this century seems to be as a result of political correctness more than anything.
Go talk to your average fundamentalist Christian about whether they love Muslims or not. You might get some interesting responses. I know very decent seeming people who have fairly harsh views for a religion that is supposed to be about loving your neighbor, turning the other cheek, loving your enemies, etc.

Yup there's also a corelation between sex and religion as at least 90% of the girls that I date end up calling out to god at some point in time.
Oh and children and religion, because at some point a parent will curse their children with a good old fashion damning.
there's also a coalation between people who are dying and religion as there's a lot of prayer going on in cancer wards.
Maybe if he had been reading Darwin, he would have slaughtered his child because the polar bear picture in the book told him to kill his son.
This killing had zero to do with religion in any shape or form, it had to do with a person who's brain was wired differently and he couldn't decern between reality and non-reality.
