I always thought it was a status thing with some Japanese / Asian cultures. The back seat is considered more prestigious.

Maybe they pretend they have a chauffeur?

Maybe they look at their wife and feel shame.

Its an asian thing. I find it pretty sad that the male children have precidence over their mother. Welcome to Canada, stop treating your wives as second class citizens.

I've seen it happen with babies in the back and no babies.

It probably does have something to do with what Daradon wrote.

My wife rides in back for longer trips in order to tend to our daughter easier. On most trips around the city, she's in the front with me.

Some cultures have the women in the back as an extention of the "ealk a couple of steps behind" practice. I don't know for sure, but I think this practice has more to do with them trying to be modest (in their definition of the word) then them implying status or importance.

For some reason I thought it was the other way round this entire time.

I believe it is a cultural/status thing, but opposite from what you suggested.

More like, "No, woman. Get your ass in the back seat."

See it a lot in Vancouver, that's for sure.

I lived at the International House when I went to San Jose State University a few years ago and ended up being good friends with someone from another country. Anyways, neither one of us had a car, but his roommate did, so the 3 of us would go places together sometimes. Well, one time, I remember trying to sit in the front and calling "shotgun" and his response was "In my country, if you are a woman, you only sit in the front seat if you are the wife or a prostitute". I thought he was joking, but then I realized he was serious and yup that's what they do in his country. His roommate (an American) and I thought that was pretty crazy.....

They're in the backseat because the guy probably has his golf clubs in the trunk.
