Got any tips on how you managed this?

As a geologist in the mineral exploration field, I am more appreciative than ever about my job. Many of the people I went to school with are "on call" or "temporary lay-off". I worked some pretty brutal hours when times were good so I am now able to catch up and evaluate what we've accomplished over the past two years.

I've had to lay off a couple workers, I get to work from home, no middle of the night calls from haywire drillers, and only work 8 hours a day 5 days/week. I feel completely under-stimulated right now.

I have some money owed to me that sometimes doubt I will ever get since his business is dropping off. As a result, I am looking for a way to survive until summer at which point I will not have the lucrative contract work I used to do, so will be forced into something entirely different.

Other than that, price of gas going down helps, but I would rather it skyrocket for the good of the economy here. Would help my bottom line more I think.

Just showed her reports online and TV that reiterates the doom and gloom we are in. If you keep doing this, she will get the picture.

For Vday, I'm just taking her out for dinner. No flowers, no card, no chocolate, no gift.

And yet you are going to the Flames Poker tournament?

Lost a bunch of hours at work for about a month, but starting next week my shifts return to what they were before. Other then that nope, not affecting me a whole lot at the moment.

Any more "Balls" and we'd probably end up divorced with her getting half of everything (except any debts) and a good portion of my salary...

If I were to force her to watch the media crap, that would mean that I would have to put up with those spoon-fed brainless morons myself and I would rather drown in debt and file for bankruptcy than put up with that!

-Lost 3 out of 9 managers @ the job...so doing more with a bit less. But got rid of a coworker I loathed so it's better to come into work.
-Investments are down about 20%, but backed away around Christmas and upped my cash position, so not too stressed.
-Actually got a raise @ work, and they kept the 'retention incentive' that I thought would have got chucked.

Bad

- Canadian office got shut down, 6 jobs lost. Not really due to the recession though, they did it out of spite to one of the Canadian employees (great company to work for!). So first time in my life I'm without a job not by my own volition.

- One rental property I have is starting to drive me crazy, and looked at the ROI and stuff if I sold it and while the return is not bad, it's not really enough to get me into a new property with equivalent cash flow after costs, so no real good reason to sell it other than it's a headache.

- The one property I did buy near the peak (which was originally for ourselves), I can't sell because the values are lower.. which is fine I'll rent it for now, but still it's annoying.

- Harder to fill vacancies now.

- have to listen to all the whining about how it's the end of the world.

Plus side

- Wife got a better job that pays more $$

- Property values are down, but most of the places I own I didn't buy anywhere near the peak so I'm fine, and they are all cash flow positive. It's more the mental pressure of worrying than real trouble.

- Cost of living going down, more money in my pocket.

- As pointed interest rates are lower so my cash flow is even better with variable mortages/heloc's.

- Able to do contract work for an hourly rate a lot more than what I was making.

- Free time to make the next iFart iPhone application and make a ton of $$ from the goofs who'll spend $1 on that kind of thing.

On the negative side
- RRSP & RESP for my son lost value (~20%)
- House lost value (~5%)
- Likely no raise this year

On posative side
- Travel costs much lower for several trips this year
- gasoline costs are less
- wife is getting a substantial raise and is having contract extended
